Apparently, they're trying to get rid of Cain, Bachmann, Perry, Gingrich, and of COURSE Paul.

I hope this spreads everywhere to show what the establishment is about. This is gross. The good news is that Romney's the only guy with a chance thats not on the list.

“If any one of these folks get the nomination it means an end to our chances of beating Obama,” says the aide. “We need moderates and independents to win in November 2012. We can’t win if the GOP name on the ballot is named Cain, Perry, Bachmann, Gingrich or Paul.”

Who is the only one leading Obama with independents again ? So they are basically confirming that they will not accept anyone but Romney. He has been the establishment choice all along.

Basically they are saying they already chose Romney and the others are distracting the average republican from supporting him. We have to beat Romney in Iowa to really freak the establishment out.

commented, waiting moderation

"Just noting the fact that Ron Paul is the ONLY candidate who is beating Obama with Independents in head to head polling, not Romney."

So Ron has no problems, no scandals he's just too conservative for the GOP today? We can work with that.

They ARE trying to get rid of Cain.

Yet a quick search only turns up two articles written by Donald Hilton – Editor at Large. The OP and this one. ;)

I liked how there wasn't even a reason why Ron Paul couldn't win except that he was "too extreme".

A proliferation of flawed, scandal-scarred candidates who — if successful — could doom the party’s changes of reclaiming the White House.

Yeah. If I didn't know any better I would think this parade of clowns and scandal ridden candidates (RP excluded) were intentional to keep BO in office ;). Even Mitt Romney does not have a chance. Many/most Christians are going to stay home before they vote for a Mormon. Ya would think this would be obvious to the people behind the scenes. Or is it? hmmmmmm

Santorum isn't on that list and, surprise, surprise, I am starting to see stories talking him up as a 'dark horse' or 'sleeper' (Rubin for example). Those people aren't worried Ron CAN'T win, they are worried about his 'the American people over the special interests' approach to governing if he DOES win.

I've often thought that Santorum has been underestimated. As Gingrich gets knocked out because of his scandal-happy past and Romney proves to be a failure at uniting the party, Santorum will be their final option. He's a warmongering neoconservative and a devout statist social conservative, the two main ingredients that the GOP establishment loves.

He is definitely going to get his push. and he'd end up endorsing Romney which I think is their only real requirement at this point. He'd lose to Romney, no question. They are just trying to get the conservative base behind someone, then have that person concede gracefully to Romney. But only a small part of the base would get behind Santorum. They know he can't beat Romney.

Frothy is at 1.7 nationally and 3.9 in Iowa. He's most likely not going anywhere. By that I mean he's never going to get to Cain or Newt status, probably not even double digits.

Two words: Newt. Gingrich.

Never say never. At this point, we can't underestimate anyone.

Exactly right!

This tells me that the establishment can only count on 25% of the GOP base to back Romney while the other 75% are trying to decide which candidate to oppose Romney with. That is good news for us! We need Ron to unify the anti Romney vote and take the nomination.
