I'm not sure if this guy gets much airtime in other segments than Chicago, but I hear him quite frequently here. But, it will probably just end up being another article that the average american never reads and they will continue following their shepherds:

With a national debt of $9 trillion and a 2008 budget deficit of $240 billion, where is the money for these rebates coming from? The only possible answer is that it's being created out of thin air. Inflation, anyone?

I thought the fine print says it is coming out of our tax refund for next year. So instead of getting the money when we file in 2009, we're getting it now. I remember reading about it on this forum. Major government fraud cause they are calling it a rebate.
