Alright, so I should be putting the finishing touches (for now) onto my second ar15 which I will put up some pics in another thread soon once I get the upper tomorrow.

Now the question is this. What should my next gun be? The purpose of the gun will be a trunk gun If SHTF I while I am out and about and my xd will no longer cut it. I already own 2 ar15s and am familiar with them. I also have ammo, and plenty of extra mags around. I like the idea of having magazine/caliber uniformity with my firearms.

However, all that said, I already have 2 AR15s and would love to get an AK47. As well, I would like to get a larger caliber firearm in case I need something a lil bigger to get the job done. I like the Arsenal AK at a local gun shop but Arsenal carries a steep price and it only comes with a 5 round mag. I would need to get a lot more mags and I've heard of plenty of AK-47s being finicky when it comes to what mags they like. I am also limited on budget to around 1000 bucks.

Please remember as you post; this isn't a which is better gun in which I think both are great firearms (or else they wouldn't be the 2 of the most predominant arms out there), this is which is better in my situation. Either stick with the platform I have the because I already am well invested in the AR platform, or slowly start to into a second platform as well.

Been to AR a few times, but never been to AK. My sister went to college in AK and my mom visited. I wouldn't mind visiting in the summer but I honestly don't have much interest in either state. I don't like being cold, and other than the Ozarks AR is not very interesting to me.

Can ar's shoot 7.62?

Sorta. There are some made with larger mag wells for bigger calibers such as 7.62 (ak and .308) but from what I think your thinking, essentially it wouldn't save me any start up costs. In fact, big caliber AR15s are also stupid expensive.

lol

Well 7.62 is much nicer to have in your arsenal in my opinion.. So that alone could be a reason to get an ak.. Besides you don't have one yet.. They are awesome.. I love mine.

At www.classicarms.us you can get an AK Saiga in .308 with a scope for $519.95.
About 2/3 of the way down the page.

I have the same thing in 7.62 x 39 and it's one terrific zombie gun! They have THOSE as well, I think for $339 or so.

I always think of the AR's as rifles and the AK's as machine guns. You could probably use a machine gun in your arsenal since you already have the AR's covered. AR's are accurate and AK's are powerful.

i think i've said this a thousand times, but a Draco AK Pistol can be had for 350$,

and a Roman WASR10 can be had for 450$.

that includes transfer fees, maybe some taxes, if you dont buy local FTF.

leaves plenty of room for mags (15$ each), and ammo ($.20/round, wolf).

not really.

MGs are:

belt felt

OPEN BOLT

FA

AK can be FA, and thats if you decide to spend another 15,000$, insteand of stopping at a 500$ SA.

not even close.

oh, and Kotin, i'm not sure how familiar you are with guns, in case you're not:
AK47: 762x39
Nato round: 762x51

If you like having all your guns use the same ammo, then get a SAIGA .223 AK variant. I have one and love it. 400 bucks. Throw it in your trunk. No need to buy more ammo. Just like the other ak's it will fire everytime and you can drag it through the mud and such.

If I was going to have a trunk gun I'd want something in a heavier caliber. Something that could possibly punch through a car door itself or perhaps some glass . Ive been looking to get an old Mauser with some accuracy to it for just that reason.

It sounds to me like you want an AK in 7.62x39....

JUST GET IT. We all know you want to! lol
Just make damn sure it's practically tactically sound in the long run

Or what might be smart, too - if you're talking about being practical, is throwing a Level IV plate carrier in your trunk...

these thugs don't play, believe me
Maybe it's just NY, I don't know

Oh and I ended up buying an AR15 upper so it looks like I am starting another AR15 build. I guess I will just do an AK next. Hah! EBR is a terrible disease!

Stick with the AR-15.... I've owned both AK and AR variants, you'll see how substantially more accurate the AR-15 is STANDING UP. Bench resting they are closer, however standing up with the right optics or even iron sites on your ar you'll see.

Having 2 systems for a tactical rifle only complicates things and makes things much more expensive, better yet, go to a gunshop and ask to pick up an AK so you can feel the difference in ergonomics for yourself. If you have a friend who has an AK you should try shooting his and compare firearms together in accuracy.

the 5.56 round which everyone whines about is FINE. 9 times out of 10 it will yaw/tumble on impact with human flesh at 100 yards or less. If you're engaging a target past 100 yards and you need to stop them immediately, ie a sniper - you probably shouldn't be engaging him with that type of rifle in the first place!

Reliability - If you know how to clean your rifle it can be pretty close, if not on par with the AK in reliability. Hollywood has pounded it into many people's heads that the AK is indestructible, which is simply not true. I've seen many AKs jam along with AR-15s. The reason? 99% were idiot operator errors. Just because it's an AK still means it can jam with dirt in it or *GASP* not cleaning it! search up AK vs AR dust test on youtube, you'll see exactly what I mean.

Just my opinion though, YMMV.... It's been a love/hate relationship with me and the AK... I've owned 3 AKs of different countries and every time I pick it up the concept seems really kool, but when I take it to the range and site it in, it really bugs me how big of a difference the accuracy and followup shots are past 100 yards. And depending on your marksmanship it might be under 100 yards for other shooters.

In a nutshell, both are excellent rifles! They both have a good track record, both have flaws which have got users on both sides killed from these flaws, IE - certain squads being investigated for executing taleban when in reality their m4 (ar-15 variant) was so damn accurate they were just constantly getting headshots because it's that awesome, and then of course getting the us side killed from jamming (more or less due to operator error IMHO)
