Correct. Machine guns are belt fed, fully automatic weapons which fire in the open bolt position. I loved shooting the M60 and when they 'replaced' it with the M240B, I was unhappy... the M240 is actually an older design than the 60... just newly manufactured. They should've just made new 60's IMO.
Conversely, M1A's, M1 Garands, AR-10's... are all considered 'battle rifles' not assault rifles lol. Civilian AR's and AK's—not chambered in full powered cartridges—are neither battle or assault rifles... rather, they are called 'semi auto rifles'.
Either AK or AR will work just fine. As mentioned earlier, they do make a Saiga in .308 when a full powered rifle round is needed.
