Apple cider vinegar. It's sort of amazing.

I started using it a couple weeks ago to treat reflux and heartburn from my spicy cooking. I googled some home remedies and ACV came up as a cure. Two tablespoons diluted in a large glass of water. It worked instantly and I continued using it because it seemed to give me a nice energy boost, and it was touted to have other health benefits. It also worked one morning when I had some nausea from a crazy night out the night before. I also stopped getting caffeine cravings and headaches (though I still have a cup of joe every day, just not four).

I continued taking it before meals as a digestion aid, two or three times a day. I felt less bloated after meals, and my cravings for junk food all but disappeared. A week later I caught myself getting dressed in the mirror and was pretty impressed. I wasn't eating or doing anything different (no exercise) but it appeared I was losing weight. My pants were fitting looser. I had heard about it for weight loss but was pretty skeptical.

Fast forward another week, and my gut is shrinking before my very eyes. I haven't changed my diet except for taking 2 tablespoons of ACV, diluted, before each meal. Today I tried on some old pants that have never fit me correctly. Last month I struggled to get them buttoned. Today, THEY FIT!

I'm also sleeping less, and better. I don't crave alcohol or caffeine like I used to. I'm losing weight and have more energy. All I can say is that something must have been out of whack in my body, and ACV is doing something about it. The best explanation I have found is that it lowers the pH in your small intestine, which decreases the amount of insulin released.

So there it is. I'm highly skeptical of most "cure alls" but it appears ACV is legit. Anyone else have experience with this amazing stuff?

I've been mixing ACV with local raw honey, 3x/day before eating, and the most obvious thing I noticed was that the Texas heat became quite a bit more bearable. I haven't noticed much else, though, but still like drinking it.

Thanks for sharing that. I have used regular vinegar before to treat indigestion, but didn't know all other possible health benfits from it. I'll have to try ACV!

It's one of nature's great helpers. I believe that everyone's body chemistry is different (and made more different by our individual habits), which might account for the dramatic changes you're seeing. As it has helped you cut down on junk food and caffeine cravings (which I'm guessing you sated with more than just coffee from time to time), I would expect the bloating to go down and your weight to drop. The lower caffeine means your sleep is less interrupted and sounder.

It won't work for everyone, obviously, but it's great to try things like this that are ACTUALLY natural and could be a part of your regular diet, because you're really not going to hurt anything.

You can sneak it into dressings and recipes as well, by the way. A quick search yielded this one:

Tomato and Herb Chicken
Ingredients:
1 medium onion, sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon dried rosemary leaves
1/2 teaspoon dried basil leaves
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 can (16 ounces) tomatoes, drained, cut into bite-size pieces
3/4 cup Tomato Ketchup
1/4 to 1/3 cup Apple Cider Vinegar
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
Dash pepper
2 1/2 to 3 pounds broiler-fryer pieces, skinned
Cornstarch-water mixture
Hot cooked noodles

Instructions:
In Dutch oven or large skillet, sauté onion, garlic and herbs in oil until onion is tender-crisp. Stir in tomatoes and next 5 ingredients. Add chicken. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer, cover, 45 to 50 minutes or until chicken is tender. Thicken sauce with cornstarch-water mixture. Serve chicken and sauce with noodles. Makes 5-6 servings (about 3 cups sauce)

(There is non-HCFS ketchup now, so the recipe still works.) ;)

Acv

I recently started using it in my homemade salad dressing. Can't say I have had any miraculous changes due to this, but that is because I am always changing as a result of always trying different things. Can't have a controlled experiment if you are always changing a bunch of variables. So, is my weight loss due to the ACV or my barefoot running or my eliminating wheat or . . . well, you get it.

If it does indeed slow the amount of insulin released, then it can be used as a viable weight loss tool. I've read a few good testimonials about diabetics seeing benefits with it. My appetite has actually gone UP after supplementing with it. I've been working from home a lot lately, so I'm pretty sedentary and wasn't eating a lot. Maybe I wasn't eating enough! The skinny pants don't lie, though, and it really does give you an energy boost. I take it with honey every morning and find that I don't need coffee.

For those considering it, get the good organic kind like Braggs or the Whole Foods Organic brand. Both contain the good stuff and aren't filtered. Dilute a tablespoon or two in a big glass of water, then rinse out your mouth so it doesn't stay on your teeth. I've gotten good results by taking it 3 times a day, before meals. I didn't change any other variables in my diet or activity level so I'm 95% certain that it's the ACV doing the magic.

I could use some for my stomach right now. Too much sushi over lunch! :(

Do it! Regular vinegar or wine vinegar works in a pinch, but they don't taste as good :)

Everybody make sure you are getting UNFILTERED Apple Cider Vinegar, and SHAKE IT UP really good before each use!! All the 'good stuff' is in that sediment at the bottom of the jar!!

I would, but I'm at work and will have to wait until I get home. I have apple cider vinegar at home that I will put to use!

I had an infectious wound on my wrist a few weeks ago where a cat bit me.

My nutritionist told me to soak gauze in apple cider vinegar and wrap up my wound with it. I changed it out every few hours for a fresh soaked poultice. I did this for 6 days, and the infection, pus, redness, and swelling all went down.

I had a few rashes on my arm from the vinegar and gauze rubbing on my skin, but it was worth it.

Braggs Organic Raw Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar is a great disinfectant.

If it weren't for Braggs, I would have to take antibiotics. And I really dislike antibiotics, because then I would have digestive issues again and have to reintroduce probiotics all over again.

I've heard that Apple Cider Vinegar kills Candida in the gut... but I never had success with that, so it may or may not be true.

For my Candida, I went to see a nutritionist and she gave me a Yeast Balance Cleanse and put me on a special diet and I am cured today! I watch what I eat all the time to keep the Candida from flaring up.

I also frequently enjoy Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar All Natural Drinks... my favorite is Ginger Spice

Totally. Braggs has the best taste. A close second is Whole Food's brand and is a few dollars cheaper. The sediment is called "The Mother." Kind of funny to see a bottle of Braggs advertising that in huge print.

Mixing it in orange juice works really well if you don't like the taste.

It works well for nausea too. My friend said he used it for food poisoning, and I successfully treated a hangover with it. My stomach gurgled wildly for about five minutes, then I felt a lot better!

There is a wonderful slim-ish booklet called "Amazing Apple Cider Vinegar" which I highly recommend. I was told that in case of aerial-borne **anthrax** threats, one could saturate a handkerchief with ACV and it would filter it out safely.

Many OTHER uses too - it's good for just about everything, it seems.

I picked up a bottle of Braggs ACV at the store on Friday to try it. I've been suffering from severe food/alcohol/sweets cravings. It's only been a couple days but there's definitely something going on because these cravings are now gone. I haven't had any alcohol since Thursday night and that's unusual since I typically drink every night. I'm thinking I had a pH imbalance or something the ACV is normalizing. I'm giving a bit to my dogs too now. So far so good... :D

I use ACV as a hair rinse. I don't really measure it though. I just keep a big jug in the bath room and pour a little in a cup and fill it the rest of the way with hot water. Just splash over my head and rinse.
