So let me get this straight. If a candidate has a past record that is not exactly peachy and advertising is conducted to inform the voting public of the past transgressions, some moral boundary has been overstepped?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for practicing what I think is right, but don’t fool yourself into thinking that politics will ever be played on a fair ground. Believe it or not, some humans are only interested in power, and the truth, however ugly it might be, should be used to offset such interests.

Besides, what are we going to do about it? Outlaw all negative campaigning ever? Limit free speech? Who exactly would enforce such an endeavor?

McCain's ace in the hole is the rock solid support his former POW status engenders from veterans. Why, then, did he single handedly block the release of MIA/POW records? In doing so, he thwarted a 401-0 vote in the House and left families of MIA's stunned. Why? A new documentary narrated by Ed Asner explores this question and reaches the apparently compelling conclusion that McCain's motivation was to suppress his own records. From this, they move to speculation about what is in those records. I can't speak to the veracity of that speculation because ... we don't have the records. Attack ads are only morally wrong if they are untrue or intentionally deceptive. It's perfectly moral to highlight the worst things about a person.

Agreed. However, some of the allegations made by SBVFT in 2004 were untrue and intentionally deceptive. All you have to do is tell the truth about McCain and people will see him for the scumbag that he is. Because SBVFT (now "Swift Vets and POWs For Truth") have already proven themselves in the eyes of many as more concerned with politics than truth, many people will be skeptical of their allegations, even if they are completely true. We need a better messenger.

Some of the other anti-McCain vets, such as Vietnam Veterans Against John McCain , seem quite upfront and truthful. I think they'd make a much better messenger. Even they seem to repudiate the Swift Boat Vets distortions. There is a link on the right-hand side of their page "Submerging the truth about Swift Boat Vets."

Our revolution is a revolution of truth, and when the truth is on your side, there's no need for liars.
