Ammunition Accountability is a newly forming group of ammunition coding technology supporters. Our group includes gun crime victims, industry representatives, law enforcement, public officials, public policy experts, and more. We are working together to pass legislation to make ammunition coding technology a reality.

Ammunition coding technology works by laser etching the back of each bullet with an alpha-numeric serial number. Then when a potential criminal purchases a box of 9mm cartridges, the box of ammunition and the bullets’ coding numbers would be connected to the purchaser in a statewide database. When a bullet is found at a crime scene, the code on the bullet can be read with a simple magnifying glass and then be run through a statewide database to determine who purchased the ammunition and where, providing a valuable investigative lead.

Allegedly this is in the following states:

Yeah, this has been posted here before, I believe.

It's super cool too. Now when I want to off someone, I can just pull some bullets I've collected at the range out of my pocket and drop them at the scene... </sarcasm>

I hope this doesn't get passed anywhere.

Are they talking about the shells or the bullet itself, i.e. the foremost part?

I would think the latter personally.

Ehh, just like every thing there will be a black-market for bullets then... If the US or certain states are doing this then the criminals will get "unmarked" ammo for there purposes. Also this can also be bad if your ammo stash gets stolen and used to commit a crime where the person shoots 3 people with your ammo... Sounds smart in theory but stupid in action.... Lots of flaws in this marked ammo.

I haven't read the legislation, but what's to stop reloaders? I mean, they'd have to outlaw the entire reloading "industry" in order to make this thing work.

Lotsa ticked-off shooters

Actually, its my understanding they are reintroducing this legislation or whatever. I listen to Cam and Company on Sirius Patriot (2nd amendment radio) in the evening and they were just talking about groups trying again to force this issue.

I don't see why - they got shot down in every state they tried. Reps from all the firearms manufactures, forensic scientists saying the markings would be worthless, ammo manufacturers stating that in order to do this they would have to build factories from scratch as they couldn't retrofit their assembly lines and they they would not do this - rather they would stop selling in any state that did this - so you know - if the police and mil want ammo... not to mention lots of people taking the day off to loudly protest it and a flood of phone calls/e-mails everywhere it was tried. Police testifying they they couldn't afford to train officers in marksmanship and keep them current if they had to pay $5 + a bullet, etc.

This should be DEAD, DEAD, DEAD! - it was introduced in every state where they thought they had a chance and struck out - 100%

Oh I agree, its dumb to try again. I think they believe they have a better chance at the Fed level with the new congress and president. (yay more people going around the states to the fed.)

We know people pushing for this arn't the shiniest bullets in the box, so I'm not surprised they are trying again.

Have you ever shot a gun? The bullets don't stay pristine.

I'm not sure what your intent was with this question but it seems somewhat condescending. Anyway yes I have shot guns and I am aware of what happens to the bullets. My point was that the other poster seemed to indicate that the shells, rather than the bullet, would be stamped, because he mentioned dropping them nearby.

Exactly. This is what happens when idiots who know nothing about firearms attempt to write laws about them.

And here is a prime example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ospNRk2uM3U

LOL, Tucker pwned her by not letting her avoid the question.

Both maybe? Disgusting though all around.

Didn't mean to sound condescending. Sorry.

It doesn't sound smart in theory.

Nah I'm not for marking anything (ammo, IDs, people, etc). But for the naysayers this is great for them as they can connect a person to the bullet but doesn't work in terms of my ammo was stolen!
