Two Prominent Republicans Expose Political Party’s Latest Fiasco
By Jimmy Kuroiwa and Dan Douglass, 4/16/2008 12:09:13 PM
Over the past two months Hawaii Republican Party platform committee persons regularly met to revise their party’s document of identity. In a highly controversial meeting this past Saturday the committee voted 26-19 to present the 2006 platform as the committee’s recommendation to the 2008 state convention. 20-30 committee persons attended prior meetings indicating overwhelming support for significant changes to the platform. One committee-person, Eric Ryan, submitted this editorial: "It's All About the Akaka Bill" The following letters were emailed to platform committee persons within hours of the Saturday morning shake up. Jimmy Kuroiwa is a leader in the John McCain campaign and Dan Douglass is a leader in the Ron Paul campaign.
Hi Fellow Republicans,
I have served as a member on the Platform and Rules Committee since 1998 and have never witnessed an "Autocracy" directed meeting ever, as happened this morning.
I guess as the lead Plaintiff of the Kuroiwa v. Lingle (OHA & State of Hawaii), an active member of the Hawaii McCain 2008 Campaign, former Hawaii Political Director of Hawaii McCain 2000, a past Honolulu County Chair of the Hawaii Republican Party, and a ranking Labor Union leader, I was not to be trusted and to be in the know. I believe in the Rules of the Party and that the words truly mean something after spending hours with now 9th Circuit Judge Rick Clifton working in reforming the Party Rules. This morning, I walked into an ambush.
I am truly saddened that the Party leadership has lost the meaning of the word "Leadership" and seem so afraid of the young and aggressive Republicans who truly want to move the Party towards a possible winning way in Hawaii. Operating like Democrats will not gain anything for the Hawaii Republicans. We as a Party should be encouraging these young and aggressive Republicans by mentoring them, not to shut them up.
The Platform Committee has completed its work with only one amendment, to change the date of the Platform from 2006 to 2008.
After sending this message, there will be a concerted effort to move me out of the Hawaii McCain 2008 Campaign. We shall see.

HRP Platform Committeepersons: What happened this morning reminded me of Claire Cheeley. She's a long time Hawaii Republican for over 50 years from district 49. Several months back she shared with me about her platform committee experience in '88. I share an affinity with her as both my parents were delegates that year. She gave permission for me to share with you her disgust with how many good Republicans worked so hard and made great progress in their platform committee only for it to be shut down by the fear driven, status quo faction. She said this is why she and her husband have not been actively involved with the Party ever since.
What happened this morning is not why I'm a Republican. If I were to base my political inclinations on what happened this morning I'd be better off as a Democrat.
More than half of the voters who were credentialed for the meeting were there for the very first time.
Two new voters, called the 'Round Table' came to vote as well. After scanning the rules, I see no 'Round Table' with voting privileges.
A newly appointed secretary took minutes after the platform committee established a secretary the week before.
The parliamentarian gave a smokescreen warning about how discussion could take up to 880 minutes when we knew it's within the rules to determine time limitations.
Orders of the day were not given by the vice-chariman at the beginning of the meeting.
After being told at the first platform committee meeting that I as HD31 chair could designate myself as my district's platform committee-person, due to no involvement from my districts committeeperson and alternate, I was told by the state chair this morning that I was disqualified from voting because the rules state that the platform committeeperson and alternate must send in writing their designation of me.
This is why I did not address the committee or vote. After scanning the rules I see no reason for my disqualification.
Congratulations to those who love status quo and poor leadership in our party for winning this battle.
I understand you have your agenda, but leading the Party to hell in a hand-basket is not on my agenda as far as my involvement is concerned.
In the course of these platform committee meetings, it has become abundantly clear to me that our Party's leadership is not about promoting reform Hawaii desperately needs.
Once again, congratulations. And God bless Claire Cheeley. She's another reason some of us don't settle for less in the Party. Dan Douglass is the Hawaii State Coordinator for the Ron Paul 2008 PCC and HD31 Chair Hawaii GOP.
