Gentlemen,
I am writing a piece about the national media's inclusion/exclusion of Dr. Ron Paul as a presidential candidate and their respective criteria for coverage
Per:
http://abcnewsradio.com/08election/advisories/supertuesday.html
I see that you have not assigned a reporter to cover Dr. Paul's race.
I have left two messages for Mr. Salinger last week and finally did speak to him this week, but he was unable to comment on my question, which is:
What criteria is being used to include/exclude existing candidates from being assigned a reporter for coverage leading up to Super Tuesday?
This morning I called your news room with an additional question:
If Rudy Guiliani drops out, will you be reassigning Steven Portnoy to Ron Paul's campaign?
The responses I rec'd include:
was hung up on 2x
was sent to a voice mail box 2x
was told by a "Carol" that that question was above her pay grade.
This is not an attempt to smear ABC, nor do I intend this to become a combative or argumentative situation.
I have been extremely polite and patient.
I have asked at each phone call who is the Mgr on Duty or Sr Editor in the newsroom and have been denied that information at each request.
It is my understanding that ABC has a license to use the public airwaves for its own profit so long as it includes a public service component. I would posit that:
a) responding to a legitimate inquiry as to who your MOD and Sr Editor is falls under public service
and
b) being more inclusive of presidential candidate coverage rather then exclusive falls under public service as well...
These are legitimate questions that deserve legitimate, timely responses.
I am hopeful we can have a short dialog about this matter, rather than my coverage consist of how ABC refused to reply to these questions, and further contributing to the phenomena and perception of the mainstream media's blackout of a legitimate candidate's campaign.
Voters deserve an answer to this legitimate question.
I did speak to an "Irma" in Steve Jones' office, who said she would pass my concerns and phone number along to Mr. Jones.
I am following that message up with this email to hopefully expedite a response.
Can one of you please call me back so we can discuss this further?
I am certain that as journalists yourself, you can relate to the legitimacy of this inquiry.
I am willing to be convinced otherwise, but so far being hung up on and told that this inquiry is above one's pay grade only further fuels the perception that there is indeed a true media blackout of Ron Paul's campaign.
I look forward to your feedback.
