Young Child Among Seven Killed in Crowd Stampede at Kabul Airport

Seven people were crushed to death Saturday as massed crowds fell against concrete barriers outside Kabul airport as they gathered to try to flee Afghanistan after the Taliban took control, according to Britain’s Ministry of Defence.

Panicked crowds were pushing forward in an attempt to board evacuation planes when the tragedy took place, Reuters reports.

“Conditions on the ground remain extremely challenging but we are doing everything we can to manage the situation as safely and securely as possible,” the UK Defence Ministry statement said on Sunday.

Taliban fighters also sparked panic by firing into the air to drive off more people who were attempting to get past guards and into the airport.

“Our sincere thoughts are with the families of the seven Afghan civilians who have sadly died in crowds in Kabul,” the ministry statement added.

Sky News global correspondent Stuart Ramsay was outside of the Hamid Karzai International Airport where he reported seeing the frustrated crowd trying to get inside before it descended into deadly chaos.

“At the front of the queue people were being crushed to death,” he wrote, noting even as the soldiers fired into the air to desperse the crowd people still pushed forward.

One mother who lost her child in the deadly crush later detailed events that came as the crowd was reportedly sprayed with a hose to keep people cool in 30C temperatures.

“My heart is bleeding,” the girl’s mother, a former employee of a U.S. organization in Kabul, told the New York Times. “It was like drowning and trying to hold your baby above the water.”

The woman said her family — her husband, the two-year-old daughter, disabled parents, three sisters and a cousin — had been trying to secure a flight to freedom from Hamid Karzai International Airport when the crowd rushed the gates.

The distraught mother tried to search for her daughter, but found her lifeless, trampled by the mob.

“I felt pure terror. I couldn’t save her,” she told the Times.

She said her daughter had remained “brave” throughout the chaos in the country.

Most of the people waiting outside the airport do not have documents, TOLONews reports, and have little to no hope of ever escaping the Taliban.

A NATO official said at least 20 people have died in the past seven days in and around the airport. Some were shot and others died in stampedes, witnesses have said, Reuters reports.

Ya know, I hate it for the Afghans that don't want to live under Taliban rule, but perhaps they shouldn't have counted on coalition troops being there forever.

They were given everything they needed to resist if resistance was their wish.

In other news the Northern Alliance tells the Taliban to fuck off, won't be subjugated, come to the table for negotiations.

So sad.

What sounds crazy to me is that supposedly they had 300,000 troops. That's over half the strength that Napoleon gathered from all over the French Empire to invade Russia. The lesson is that it's not numbers, but rather discipline and desire that counts.

Also I read a poll that showed 99% of Afghanis wanted to live under Sharia law. That's fine. They can have it in their borders, but keep it out of my borders.

THEY will make them your new neighbors.

Be sure to work harder to pay more taxes, because all of these people will be going directly on the public payroll.

That crowd could easily storm the presidential palace, capture Taliban prisoners, acquire their weapons, proceed to expel them from Kabul.

Well, that seems pretty fucking apparent. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.

The "Northern Alliance," however isn't having any of the Talibans bullshit. Probably should have left all the arms and ammo in their provinces.

OK , if all these people dont have papers and are not getting out , where are all these people who are US citizens or dual citizenship everyone claims is there? Also if you had dual citizenship and you were still in Afghanistan by several weeks ago just to get some extra DOD dollars I cant say I'm feeling that sorry for you. These people who cant get out should be killing the people they are scared of living under I would guess but I'll defer .

Yeah. Sorry if it sounded like I was preaching to the choir, I am just blown away by the 300,000 number of troops. That's a hell of an army for a country that size. Not to mention the 20 years of training and the billions on weapons. I know on this site we're pretty well versed in government corruption and incompetence, but this collosal failure is above and beyond...

No worries. Their army was a paper tiger. Many NATO military commanders, including our own, knew it.

I've not seen a single Afghan woman walk into a Taliban check point and detonate a suicide vest. Guess women everywhere prefer to be victimized by 'bad boys' they think they can change.

White House told the press pool in the past 24 hours they have brought out 3800 people and 17K since 8/14. Doesnt sound like there should be many left assuming those are citizens .

John 10:12 "The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it."

From what I read many of these 300,000 "troops" were criminals paid to be in uniform. And some "ghost troops" existed only on the books. The people who were willing to cling to a C130 until they fell to their deaths should have been rifle ready.

They are holed up in Panjshir valley. One way in or out and easy to defend. The British and Russians never conquered it. They can hold the valley but probably won't be able to project power in the rest of the country. Well unless the Taliban gets all air power we left them up in the air, then Massoud is fucked.

Taliban isn't gonna be able to use the air power. The Chinese will trade it for conventional arms so they can reverse engineer it.

And the Taliban will not fuck with them. They are just making clear...they aren't.

Helicopters need at least 2 hours of maintenance for every 1 hour of flight. I can't really see them doing that. I also don't see them getting all the replacement parts for the maintenance and repairs unless they are getting them through back channels.

It's just outdated Blackhawks and some turboprop ground attack planes. The Chinese probably have no use for the choppers. But the Taliban could conceivably get the planes in the air, they are fairly basic. I doubt it though.

I think it will just end up like the last time, they will hold the valley in a stalemate with the Taliban. We should arm the resistance, oh wait....

You seem like an expert. Thank you.

Recall reading that 7 people were killed inside the airport few days ago during military plane take off chaos, total count should be 14 then.

This time around situation appears to be different and they seem isolated politically and in terms of getting support from outside. Cultivating Tajik ethnic differences would also be more difficult now with Taliban 2.0 relatively a more diverse group. Besides China and Russia, Iran also seems friendly with Talibs now especially after them protecting Hazara shiites religious processions this week. Mountains maybe their best ally but more likley that Panjshir valley will come to the table and laydown arms. China's aggressive posturing likey is another boost for T 2.0 nad may have been a major catalyst behind speedy routing of ANA, Panjshir reportedly had given refuge to some NDS figures and according to China's State Paper NDS was implicarted in July terrorist attack that killed 9 Chinese Belt n Road engineers.

First of all, not all 300,000 were being brought here. Recall seeing some news where 65000 refugees or so were talked about but no one seems to know for sure where the final number will settle.

Secondly, limited version of sharia has been already here since the time Reagan dedicated space shuttle to the Afghan people and their resistance against Russian infidels.

Report: Number of mosques in US grows overall, but African American mosques in decline
June 2, 2021
By Joseph Hammond
“The Muslim American community is a very diverse and at any given mosque, when a critical mass is reached, there is often a desire to start another mosque. This is something we have seen in many groups from Afghani-Americans to Somali-Americans. It is also a phenomenon that we find in other religious groups in America as well,” Bagby said.
