5 GOP Senators To Defy Trump On Iran War Powers

It passes 55-45. Unfortunately, it’s not veto proof.

It sends an important message though.

If my mathematics are correct that was 8 GOPers voted for it.

That's a huge improvement on previous efforts to limit a presidents power...

So are you for or against limiting the presidents war powers?

I thought the Constitution gave the different branches of the government authority and it would take a constitutional amendment to change it. Hypothetical question, just a thought experiment I don't want to argue symantics. Assuming the Congress can change presidential powers would you want a Congress to hamstring the commander in chief prolonging a war indefinitely by removing their ability to wage it effectively so that we are in a war that effectively cannot be won while the Congress taxes you indefinitely for it?

Roll Call:

Republicans who voted for the Resolution:

Todd Young
Mike Lee
Lisa Murkowski
Susan Collins
Rand Paul
Bill Cassidy
Jerry Moran
Lamar Alexander

Which Democrats voted against it?

Irans missile strike was like nothing America has seen against it in a long time. (Despite the Press dismissing it)

Is it 100 service members have concussion symptoms now??

Trump & his admin need to make sure they are working for US interest in ME & not Israel or SA first.

Good for Congress taking sane step back.

So Romney voted against it? lol

Trump abuses power (true) but let's not have Congress assert their constitutional authority.

If Trump does veto, I think enough Senators would take it as an affront to their responsibilities that they could get enough votes to override the veto.

That won't happen... it needs 2/3rd;s and we can only get 8 GOP..... Math need another 13 and that's impossible. They're all in the hands of the powerful MIC

Traditional line of thinking agrees with you. I don't think this is a traditional time though....we shall see.

This will be vetoed

eta: On Liberty Report, Ron says that since it's a concurrent resolution and not actual legislation it isn't something that can legally be veto'ed by POTUS any way. Rand wasn't sure.

So it is a symbolic statement that's nonbinding. I read that it was before but with all the headlines it got lost.

The House passed a concurrent. The Senate passed a Joint. The joint is legislation that if passed by both houses goes to the presidents desk. The majority leader (Hoyer) has said the House will now take up the Senate's Joint resolution and pass it so it will go to the president's desk and he will veto it but its a message telling him to back off.

This is my understanding. It's not easy to follow. They like to make it complicated and arcane so the peons don't understand.
