maybe it's the fact we have better energy saving refrigerators, while smartphones and computers are relatively new.

the paper actually attributes it to the use of wireless networks, which would be no better if your device was a tablet or computer. Smartphones are just one of many devices which use the same wireless technology. Is wireless communication less energy consuming than using copper wires? are smartphones more efficient than computers 10 years ago?
