Gov. Bobby Jindal has declared a state of emergency due to cold weather conditions in Louisiana and across the country. The declaration allows for steps to be taken to ensure citizens here and in other states have ready access to propane and other heating fuels.
The declaration was made on Wednesday (Jan. 22) evening. It directs staff at the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, or GOHSEP, to take steps to mitigate "shortages and interruptions" in access to heating fuels here and elsewhere.
This includes temporarily suspending certain rules and regulations, such as those on truck operators that keep them from driving more than a certain number of hours. By easing these restrictions, operators can make their shipments of key needed heating fuels without breaking the rule on hourly limits.
"This is just making sure that we do everything that we can, with Louisiana being a key exporter and supplier of some of the fuels and propane, it's just making we do everything we can making sure the supplies don't get interrupted," said GOHSEP Director Mike Steele, adding, weather of this type "can be a life or death situation."
Steele also said GOHSEP has activated its Crisis Action Team to liaise through the cold snap with members of local governments. State offices in 22 parishes, including Ascension, West Baton Rouge, Iberville and Lafayette, will remain closed Friday in anticipation of hazardous driving conditions and power outages.
A hard freeze watch was issued Wednesday for areas north of Lakes Pontchartrain and Maurepas, including Baton Rouge and Slidell, through Friday morning. Temperatures are expected to fall into the lower to middle 20s in the I-12 cooridor, with lows in the upper 20s and lower 30s across southeast Louisiana.

So, what's the price of propane there? They just raised it to $6.99 here (bastards, that's double)!

to be honest, i don't know. i have found a place that will top off my bottles, instead of exchange. but it never seemed that expensive.

according to the future track, you will probably only see sleet. it will get up to 33 degrees around noon, and won't return back to below freezing until 6pm.

what is the temp at your location?
its 21f here.
It's 35f now. I'll bet my son in Baton Rouge is getting some snow.

Jobsite radio yesterday had the local distributors in agreement to hold price at $2.89 but they're limiting each home to 100 gallons.

We have a cold front that moved through, only to get worse first of next week. So, they doubled the price of propane on us.

It's currently -8f outside, and I'm using wood heat along with the propane to keep warm and conserve on propane. I think I have over 20% in a 500 gal tank left (I usually only get 200 gal each year, maybe I should have bought a little more this past summer).

How much wood have you chopped?
-8f? people would be dead in this state.

I have a rick (1/2 cord) or so here and probably a little over that at the shop (which I'm not going to go to in this weather).

I need to get to the nearest town, south of here, to get groceries, but the church on the way burnt down this morning and the road is closed. So, I'll have to go later this afternoon.

I could understand a limit on the number of gallons, but to double the price is not to help prevent hoarding but is gouging. There are a lot of people around here that are going be cold because they can't afford prices like that.

Our school district was closed yesterday because of -30 wind chills and then today, it is 15 degrees and some of the high school kids are wearing shorts and sandals. Crazy Minnesotans.

Swimming with polar bears. I guess your body gets used to it.
20f seems like 8 layers of clothing weather to me.
