In reading the coverage of the race, reporters often mention that they are "traveling with" Candidate X or Candidate Y on a bus that the campaign charters. Is there a reason that Ron Paul is not making it easy for reporters to cover him in this same way?

Someone from the official campaign should contact the editorial board at The State, South Carolina's main newspaper. According to this blog post from their editor, they will not endorse until this weekend and they would meet with Ron Paul if he asked to meet with them...

The official campaign response seems to strike the right balance between forcefully disavowing the views, accepting responsibility for letting the newsletter go out under his name, and dismissing this as a cheap, recycled attack. Of course I'm biased.
