I think that comment about needing more atheists was more tongue-in-cheek than people are making it. At least thats how I took it since there is a ;) next to the title. People are taking it too literally.

Paul10 is referring to people where it doesn't matter how you're registered. 4RPinKCMO is referring to people where it does matter how you're registered.

Because, as a group, they still fit the bill better than the republicans. So more atheists are still registered that way. If we could clone Ron Paul, and make him the majority in the republican party, then that might change things.

From my experience, my guess is that most Atheists lean more towards libertarian than anything else. Or at least, socially liberal and fiscally conservative. Given the rise of the neocons, the democrats have simply fit that bill better than republicans since the mid 90's. So to assume that...
