You cannot reach some people.

Your girlfriend might be a fool. When I talk to mine about politics, she typically agrees with me, even though she is a far left liberal. Some people won't turn on a guy until the msm turns on him. That will be what happens with Obama.

It is not msm, it is the old media.

Buy her a plane ticket to North Korea to see how she likes living under socialism/communism. I bet the scales will be lifted from her ignorant eyes, or perhaps she'll like and and we'll have one less big govt person to worry about. ;) Either way its a win/win.

No.

She will come back and say "Yeah, and your point? This is America, that kind of socialism/communism can never happen here."

Exactly and the cognitive dissonance that will result when you explain that her views are not just wrong in their effects but immoral will be very strong. It is hard to come to terms with the fact that you advocate violence when that fact is presented to you.

This is the heart of my "Ignorant or Immoral" thread. People think that their actions are virtuous, when in fact they are immoral. If one truly wants to engage in altruistic behavior they can do it without forcing everyone else to at the point of a gun. I give of myself freely and don't ask for any recognition for the acts that I preform. People that attend charity events and take the podium for the glory of receiving a plaque or award for their deeds are immoral as well. You can do things for people without them even knowing you were there. The idea of Santa Claus falls inline with this principle. He shows up and nobody is supposed to see him.

On the point of the OP, I don't mean to bash or ridicule you at all, but if you ask a question and someone lies to you so as to not hurt your feelings, then what did you learn? You won't find me bullshitting you if you want an honest assessment then you will get different philosophies being presented, mine is harsher than most. How many people actually "keep it real"?

I was trying to enforce this argument with someone over the past week, and they kept throwing back the "you have the freedom to leave and go to another country, if you don't like it, therefore it's moral".

What do you think the best way to refute these types of people are?

That everyone is free and this is there home, they have no buisness coming into town enlsaving people and saying those that don't like it can leave. No different than barging into someones home with a gun and bossing everyone around, and then telling them that they can leave if they don't like it with no recourse.

People fight and die for home and country for a reason.

In this country you are only free to the extent you conform to the will of the majority.

Even in the current health care debate. If you do not get health insurance it will be a crime.

My wife isn't all that into politics the way I am...she labels herself a "humanitarian", whatever that means (I guess just helping people). She watched the Ron Paul videos and ended up liking him. But she likes Bill Clinton because she said that he was a humanitarian. There are so many ways to be a "humanitarian", but I let it be...she votes for who I tell her to since she could really care less.

My gf is the same way with voting. She doesnt' really know enough to make an informed opinion on things, but when I ask her about certain principles of libertarianism etc she hasn't disagreed with me once.

The voting thing is cool because she and her friend vote how I tell them to

You have to start with a very simple foundation for most people, you can't just jump into economic arguments because a. They won't understand the economics of it and perceive it to be utterly boring and b. They don't care enough to hear about it

I suggest you start newbies watching this video (Individualism vs. Collectivism) and build from there. It will save you all lot heartache in the future.
