Saudi-led coalition in Yemen accused of 'genocide' after airstrike on funeral hall kills 140

US says it will 'review' its support after latest attack

Saudi Arabia has been blamed for the latest attack AFP/Getty Images The Saudi Arabian-led coalition in Yemen has been accused of carrying out a "genocide" after its latest airstrike killed 140 people at a funeral.
Mohammed Abdul-Salam, the Yemeni rebel government's spokesman in Sana'a said the airstrike was an act of "genocide" by the Saudi-led alliance, which is fighting the rebels.
"The silence of the United Nations and the international community is the munition of the murderers," he added. "Those murderers will not escape divine justice."
The strike is the latest of a string of bombings by the Saudi-led coalition that have hit public areas, including hospitals and markets
Saudi Arabia has consistently denied targetting civilians. The coalition did not immediately accept responsibility for the latest strike but said it would launch an investigation into "reports about the regrettable and painful bombing" in Sana'a.
The Saudi-owned Al Arabiya television network later stated the coalition had not carried out any airstrikes in the area.
The latest attack prompted the United States to launch a review of its support for a Saudi-led coalition fighting the government in Yemen after an air strike on a funeral killed 140 people and wounded more than 525.
White House national security spokesman Ned Price said the US administration was "deeply disturbed" by the attack. US support was "not a blank check", he added.
Mr Price said: "We have initiated an immediate review of our already significantly reduced support to the Saudi-led Coalition and are prepared to adjust our support so as to better align with U.S. principles, values and interests, including achieving an immediate and durable end to Yemen's tragic conflict."

The latest strike hit a gathering of mourners in the Yemeni capital, Sana'a, when thousands of people were packed into the hall.
The funeral was being held for the father of Galal al-Rawishan, the rebel government’s Interior Minister who sources said was seriously injured in the attack.
Other mourners included a number of military and security officials from the Houthi rebel group, which seized control of Yemen after overthrowing the internationally-recognised government in 2015.
The airstrike is one of the deadliest attacks in the country’s ongoing civil war. Witnesses reported seeing hundreds of body parts strewn across the hall and rescuers collecting them in sacks.
One rescuer, Murad Tawfiq, said: “The place has been turned into a lake of blood”.
The Yemeni health ministry used radio broadcasts to summon off-duty doctors and call on residents to donate blood.

The United Nations humanitarian co-ordinator in Yemen, Jamie McGoldrick, said he was “shocked and outraged” by the “horrific” attack.
“The international community must exert pressure and influence on all parties to the conflict to ensure civilians are protected”, he said. “This violence against civilians in Yemen must stop immediately.”
A statement released by the Saudi Arabian government said: "The coalition confirms that its troops have clear instructions not to target populated area and to avoid civilians."
Yemen has been engulfed by civil war since 2014, when the Houthi rebel forces overthrew then president Addrabbuh Mansur Hadi. The Saudi-backed coalition is fighting to restore Hadi to power. The United States is also supporting the coalition with weapons, logistical support and intelligence information.
The latest attack prompted the US to review its support for the coalition, a White House spokesman said.
An estimated 9,000 people have been killed in the conflict and more than three million forced to leave their homes.
The high civilian death toll from the Saudi-led attacks has led to calls for British arms sales to Saudi Arabia to be suspended.

US says support for Saudi Arabia not a 'blank cheque' after Yemen air raid

The US said its security cooperation with Saudi Arabia was not a “blank cheque” as Riyadh agreed to mount an investigation into a widely condemned air raid on funeral in Yemen that killed 140 people.

In one of the deadliest attacks of the country’s civil war, which Saudi Arabia entered in March 2015, airstrikes on Saturday hit a funeral hall packed with thousands of mourners in Yemen’s rebel-held capital, Sana’a. More than 525 people were wounded.

The Saudi-led coalition has not acknowledged responsibility for the attack, even as it announced an investigation, but is the only force with such air power in the conflict.

The White House issued a statement saying it had begun an “immediate review” of its support for Saudi Arabia in Yemen. The attack has been condemned by the UN, the European Union and the United States.

The issue is embarrassing for the US since it has decried the Russian failure to be more open about its role in the air attack on a UN aid convoy in Syria, and it will face allegations of double standards if it allows the Saudis to delay an inquiry.

The US, like the UK, supplies arms to Saudi Arabia and practical military advice, even though the precise extent of that advice is disputed.

White House national security council spokesman Ned Simon said: “We are deeply disturbed by reports of [the] airstrike on a funeral hall in Yemen, which, if confirmed, would continue the troubling series of attacks striking Yemeni civilians. US security cooperation with Saudi Arabia is not a blank cheque.

“Even as we assist Saudi Arabia regarding the defence of their territorial integrity, we have and will continue to express our serious concerns about the conflict in Yemen and how it has been waged. In light of this and other recent incidents, we have initiated an immediate review of our already significantly reduced support to the Saudi-led coalition and are prepared to adjust our support so as to better align with US principles, values and interests, including achieving an immediate and durable end to Yemen’s tragic conflict.”

The UK foreign office minister Tobias Ellwood also called for the Saudis to urgently investigate. Reuters quoted Saudi officials as denying any strike and insisting its air force has clear instructions to avoid such targets. The Foreign Office has insisted UK arms export licences to Saudi Arabia do not need to be revoked since there was no serious risk of a breach of humanitarian law.

In an unexpected twist, Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks even though it is thought the deaths were caused by an air raid, and Isis has no access to aircraft.

That's a hell of a lot of destruction. I can't imagine what it would be like to have been caught in the middle.

It pisses me off that my tax dollars got one group of people rich and another group killed.

"No one believes the denials of the Saudis: clearly this event was targeted for special treatment. They didn’t just bomb it once: they came back again to rain death and destruction on the mourners. And these weren’t just any mourners: it was the funeral of the father of the Houthi Interior Minister, Jalal al-Rowaishan, with many government officials present. The dead included the Mayor of Sanaa: we don’t yet know if the Interior Minister survived."

"There is no doubt that targeting of it was deliberate. Even if coalition airstrikes hit civilian targets by accident, they may still be considered war crimes. The bombing of this funeral was clearly done on purpose with blatant disregard for the lives of the civilians there. Targeting a site where many hundreds of noncombatants were gathered is undeniably a gross violation of international law. As they have done in the past, coalition jets returned to bomb the place again as first responders appeared on the scene. This so-called “double tap” strike has become a common tactic for the Saudis and their allies ...

This attack and others like it are made possible by U.S. refueling and weapons. … The Saudi-led war cannot continue without the refueling and weapons the U.S. provides them …The Saudis have been blocking just such an investigation [of war crimes] for months with U.S. and British help, because they fear that an independent inquiry would confirm that they have committed numerous crimes during their bombing campaign. …"

US State Dept defends #Saudi massacre of Yemeni civilians

230608.jpg

"The U.S. State Department Spokesperson, John Kirby, claimed on Tuesday
that the Saudi airstrike against Yemeni civilians in Sanaa was "different" than Russian and Syrian airstrikes in Aleppo.

The flustered Kirby then claimed the Saudis are not "deliberately targeting civilians" like the Russians and Syrians;
furthermore, the Saudi Air Force is "investigating" the airstrikes.

Shockingly, Kirby then asserts that the Saudis are defending themselves
against the Houthi fighters that are allegedly being armed by the Iranians."

UN officials call on Saudi coalition to reopen Yemen's main airport

Yemen's healthcare system was already overloaded and under-resourced.

Hundreds of new casualties from Saturday's airstrike have now pushed it to the brink,
with many needing urgent medical care not available in the impoverished country.

"The health system here is in a very bad state.
There's no operational budgets for health centres and hospitals in this country,".

"I heard from the director of the hospital
they had to run around to the private pharmacies
to buy the materials because they didn't have it in stock."

Medical evacuations out of Yemen are impossible.

Since the Saudi-led coalition resumed airstrikes on Yemen on August 10,
they have imposed restrictions on Yemeni airspace.

This forced the closure of the country's main airport in Sana'a,
with no civilian flights in or out for the past two months.

"It's very difficult for them to get out by sea and almost impossible by road.
So you have a Yemeni population that is completely locked up in its own country.
They can't get out,".

"You've basically got 27 million people who are being kept in a prison."

Matt Kirby = Mr. Orwellian Newspeak : the Saudi's invading Yemen and massacring civilians and starving the county with a blockade are "defending themselves".

Matt Kirby "It's the Yemeni's fault for getting bombed, massacred and starved"

Meanwhile, while Washington arms the totalitarian Saudi regime, and arms the terrorists rebels in Syria, Kirby tries to blame on Iran for Houthi's defending themselves by falsely claiming Iran is supplying Houthi's with missiles. The Zilzal-3 missiles used Houthi are smaller replicas produced by Yemeni engineers, not Iran.
