Yellowstone volcano?

Bison mating season?

Maybe they're all relocating to another state before those new ACA rules / tax hikes kick in?

Perhaps they're thinking "Damn it's April and it's still cold as hell here, let's peace out to San Diego"

Scientists dismiss claims that Yellowstone volcano about to erupt

Yellowstone National Park assured guests and the public on Thursday that a super-volcano under the park was not expected to erupt anytime soon, despite an alarmist video that claimed bison had been seen fleeing to avoid such a calamity.

Yellowstone officials, who fielded dozens of calls and emails since the video went viral this week following an earthquake in the park, said the video actually shows bison galloping down a paved road that leads deeper into the park. (To see the video, click on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ij7ZHa1GqPQ)

"It was a spring-like day and they were frisky. Contrary to online reports, it's a natural occurrence and not the end of the world," park spokeswoman Amy Bartlett said.

Assurances by Yellowstone officials and government geologists that the ancient super-volcano beneath the park is not due to explode for eons have apparently done little to quell fears among the thousands who have viewed recent video postings of the thundering herd.

Commentary with one of the clips by a self-described survivalist wearing camouflage, dark sunglasses and a black watch cap suggests the wildlife exodus may be tied to "an imminent eruption here at Yellowstone."

The 4.8 magnitude earthquake that struck early Sunday near the Norris Geyser Basin in the northwest section of Yellowstone, which spans 3,472 square miles of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, caused no injuries or damages and did not make any noticeable alterations to the landscape, geologists said.

Though benign by seismic standards, it was the largest to rattle Yellowstone since a 4.8 quake in February 1980 and it occurred near an area of ground uplift tied to the upward movement of molten rock in the super-volcano, whose mouth, or caldera, is 50 miles long and 30 miles wide.

But neither the quake, the largest among hundreds that have struck near the geyser basin in the last seven months, nor the uplift suggest an eruption sooner than tens of thousands of years, said Peter Cervelli, associate director for science and technology at the U.S. Geological Survey's Volcano Science Center in California.

"The chance of that happening in our lifetimes is exceedingly insignificant," said Cervelli, a scientist with the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory.

Cervelli said the area of uplift that scientists have been tracking since August is rising at a rate of between 10 centimeters (4 inches) and 15 centimeters a year. Geologists who tracked uplift in the same area from 1996 to 2003 also saw elevated seismic activity, he said.

A local news station had one of those come-ons saying the real reason for the reason the buffalo video right after this commercial...

yeah right.

Anyway so I get on the Internet and do a little Google Foo. Lots of articles starting out saying the real reason but none of them know!

I did find this tidbit;

"Yellowstone officials, who fielded dozens of calls and emails since the video went viral this week following an earthquake in the park, said the video actually shows bison galloping down a paved road that leads deeper into the park.”"

Which really means nothing. Cept, if it is some danger, that places it between them and me.

Well, it's hard to tell, bison tend to keep a pretty straight face, even when they are in on the joke.

Kind of like horses standing on your foot?

I'm pretty sure they know what they are doing but they get this attitude that they are completely unaware and a million miles away thinking of some filly or something.

If that thing blows, life in the USA as we know it, is over.

I watched a documentary on this a few years ago. Aren't we in the window for estimated eruption time?

Granted...that window was like hundreds of thousands (or maybe millions..be awhile) years.
Did you watch that bullshit in school, as I did?

I'm just curious if fear propaganda was nationally regulated under the curriculum.

Well , yeah , no food production , no oil production , no gas production and still have Illinois and DC and the East Coast .... kind of like a nightmare I have sometimes but without the waking up ......where I am in a fire fight in an open hay field , enemy has the high ground , I am outnumbered , out gunned , I always wake up before the inevitable end . :) seems to have passed in recent yrs along with the malaria reminders . LOL

It is likely nothing. Geologist know how super volcanos blow. The conditions aren't right yet with Yellowstone since it is constantly releasing building pressure. Further you need a collapse of the crust onto the core if I recall. I'm more amazed the Bison ran on the right side of the road.
As I recall, the Yellowstone super volcano is a caldera created by a "Hot Spot". A pocket of magma resides in the earth's crust above the mantel. Thats why Yellowstone stone has geysers, the pocket of magma is close enough to super heat water in the earth's crust. Geysers do not equate to volcanoes releasing pressure, other than the steam pressure they create as a byproduct. IIRC, increases in elevation are indicators of a growing pocket of magma, yet not necessarily a indicator of imminent eruption, as this process can take a very long time.

After watching that bison video, for all I know the bison are running towards Yellowstone.

I have no idea..

But I do find it interesting that so much effort is being put into debunking and downplaying it.

If it is really nothing,, then ignore it..

But all the effort to stifle the concerns seems like Baghdad Bob.. "nothing to see here".

Yellowstone could very well blow tomorrow, I need better evidence before I become concerned enough to take drastic measures. Note: It's good to be prepared.
