Wyoming Eliminates "Gun-free Zones"

Republican Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon is about to sign a bill passed last week by both houses that will eliminate the last of any “gun-free zones” existing in the Cowboy State. If he doesn’t sign it within three days, the bill will automatically become law.

It’s called the “Wyoming Repeal Gun Free Zones Act,” and it allows state citizens carrying a concealed firearm to be present at “any meeting of a governmental entity … or a committee thereof,” as well as at “any public school, public college or university athletic event” and “any public elementary or secondary school facility,” including “any public college or university facility.”

The exceptions are minor, with the bill exempting athletic events where alcohol is being sold and state-licensed health and human services facilities.

This is a good example of republicanism (i.e., states and municipalities) making policies that serve the interests, the demographics, and the whims of the local constituency.

I believe that Cheyenne is the largest town in Wyoming (maybe Casper but I don't think so). It has a population of roughly 60k people. As a whole, there are more pronghorns in Wyoming than there are people. So this really shouldn't have ever needed to rise to the level of the state government passing legislation... there wasn't any reason for legislation against carry in the first place. I've spent a lot of time in Wyoming. I've driven through it north to south and east to west. You can drive for HOURS without so much as seeing a house. It's definitely one of those states that you don't want to head down the road with no less than 3/4 of a tank of gas, for sure. It's probably top of the list, without thinking too much about it... MAYBE western Oklahoma, or North Dakota. Anyway, it's good that the legislature got rid of that "gun free zone" nonsense. If highly urban states like on the east coast and the west coast want to do gun free zones, by all means have at it. But that's ridiculous in a state like Wyoming.

ETA: as I think more about it, counties and even local jurisdictions should have the discretion to do so without state interference. Thinking of my state, almost all of the policies are made based on what goes on in Baltimore and central and eastern Maryland. Out here, we're practically West Virginia. It's actually absurd that we're even living in a state together. I have almost nothing - NOTHING - in common with someone who lives in Montgomery County. The only green those people ever see are manicured lawns in front of a row of a thousand townhouses that all look the same. Whereas I can walk out my backdoor and into the woods sit down somewhere and enjoy the sound of the wind blowing through the trees.
