In this Dec 07 PBS doucmentary on Ron Paul, a professor says Ron Paul will abolish social security. Would you still vote for him if you knew he would remove 99% of social security benefits?

This includes things like most unemployment benefits, healthcare and veterans benefits?
edit: i suspect it also includes things like tax benefits for having children, disability benefits and so on.

Because most of us younger people will never get it anyway. It is a bankrupt system and the baby boomers will pop it long before we get any back.

He's not taking away anyone's Social Security. Wingman, it looks like you're a Ron Paul supporter, but you've been misinformed about his stances in many threads now.

Careful saying "he said he said". That isn't first hand - go to ronpaul2008 site and read it yourself. Still not sure, research.

The thing about Social (in)Security is it was originally a VOLUNTARY system. Lets put it back at least to that, however if we got rid of it, I would want (but not expect) a refund for every dime I put into a failing system that does nothing more than support private drug companies.

For those that are on Social Security, fine. Our government (we) made a promise to take care of these people in exchange for paying a Social Security tax. We made a promise and should hold ourselves to it. As far as anyone else that is looking to bail out, do it. Get out. Its not stable and wont be there by the time I retire at 67, or as adjusted by the time I turn 67, retire at 93, then 107, and so on. I think Social Security was a mistake, but as a believer in freedom = responsiblity for my actions, we need to hold up to our end of the bargain and fulfill the promises that we made.

Pay out on those now collecting, and let the damn system die already.

comes with a catch,
I want my 12.5% back that goes to it

Hell at this point I would settle for no SS tax taken out of my furture checks....meaning I keep it

and the money they stole since age 16 I would forgive (better than an armed revolution dont ya think?)

This thread is an attractive nuisance. Its based wholly on hearsay by some unnamed professor who essentially claims that Ron Paul would do the political equivalent of eating babies for breakfast if elected. The poll question can't be answered intelligently as it is inflammatory and untrue, so no sale here.

And said professor was quoting very inaccurately, so here here!

Ron is not trying to forcibly remove anything. His proposal would give us the option to opt-out, seeing as most of us will never see a dime from the gutted social security system, but will still be *coerced* to pay into it. It's just another tax. This poll is silly btw. Of course we're voting for the Man. Whether you agree with all his positions or not, you know where he stands -- he's a rock.

This is like the Ron Paul supporter that got on the Medved show a few days ago. Medved found out how old he was (82), then asked if he took medicaid. He said yes and, to Medved, that was proof of how silly the man was, and Medved cut him off. You take benefits and yet would vote a man that would strip said benefits? Rabble!

Greetings All,

If anyone under 50 or so honestly thinks they will be getting anything back from Socialist Security I think they are fooling themselves. As far as I'm concerned that's money taken from my paycheck that I'll never see again. Even if I knew that really did stand to get back 100% of what I've put in over the years back when I retire I'd still vote to abolish Social Security today if it meant I'd never have to pay into it again. By the time I retire the money will be worth pennies on the dollar.

You already voted for crooks who spent your social security

Ron Paul has never voted to dip into SS funds. He wants to phase it out, so that young people can make their own plans. He will make sure that the people who paid into social security and depend on it will be provided for.

all good points..

in response to -user- above: nah its not me saying thats what ron paul is going to do. im saying that the professor in the video is saying it.

actually i dont think ron paul knows precisely how he is going to do what he wants to do yet. so im just hoping to promote discussion.

hE'S NOT ABOLISHING SOCIAL SECURITY.. he wants to take the fed government out of it bc they keep spending our money over seas.. we will have our own retiremnt accounts with out government intervention..

wouldnt you rather manange your own money then have the government spend it overseas?

A better question would be "Do people in the grassroots not understand affordability versus dependancy?". You would have gotten all "no's".

I'll agree with that. I dont understand it. But then again I dont think its designed to be understood. Most government forms are intimidating to me, as I think they are to most people, so they wont bother trying to collect on any benefits... Of course this is kind of off the point of keep it or get rid of it, and sure the thread is probably not exactly in line with what RP may have planned.

I know that sometimes all I do is complain about a situation and offer nothing to fix it so I'll try to change my mindset. So what would you do if you were RP? Fix it, change it, abolish it, cut people off or not, etc?

RP's plan is pretty good for now. Use the money saved from not maintaining an empire anymore to fund SS, and let young people opt out.
