Windows 10?

Do a google search (or some other search engine if you're opposed to google) there are ways to remove that advertisement.
I looked at some of those and they involved deleting some update and then having to continue to do that every time you do another update or something along those lines. Sounds like a lot of work. Guess I'll just let that bit of spam sit there. Thanks anyway.

Pretty sure it's just 1 specific Windows update (I have mine set to not automatically install so I can look through them first). I'm guessing you went through all these steps already but if not maybe a helpful link: http://www.howtogeek.com/218856/how...ndows-10-icon-shown-in-the-notification-tray/

I was lucky enough to never get the notifications, so I haven't had to deal with it. Hopefully the link helps if not well I guess having the spam is still better than having windows 10 right?

Thanks. I dislike the idea they have to update at all. When I write software, it's good and doesn't need updates. I suspect Microsoft keeps making patches to keep track of us.

I'll just leave it as it is.

Count me in as yet another to suggest throwing away the commercial OSes and switching to Linux (or similar *nix OS).

It generally has the broadest hardware support, is open source, stable, secure-er, free (as in freedom), free (as in beer), and it's fun.

Thanks to projects like Ubuntu, installing Linux is super easy and you'll be able to do nearly everything you need right out of the box.

The most common challenge is probably microsoft office and high-end gaming compatibility, but aside from those, most everything you need will be readily at your fingertips.

Once you progress and get comfortable using Linux and are ready to learn more, learning about the filesystem and command line can literally change your life and way of thinking about computers, and it only goes up from there.

The best part of Linux, however, is ending the abuse of companies like Microsoft and Apple.

Anyway, that's my Linux spiel!

I had to turn off Windows Update and run a batch file to kill off all the forced updates that had been downloaded to my computer.

Win10 is basically a massive piece of spyware. Unless you want your digital life documented by Microsoft - for whatever purpose they choose to put it to - do not let this piece of crap infect your machine.

LOL. I do not have experience living in a fantasy world, true.

Every time in the last 35 years I've been forced to abandon a piece of software it was because the platform made changes that made it impossible to run said software anymore. Sometimes it was for drastic reasons like when Apple decided to kill off the 2 series and only do Mac, or like when they did it again for os x.

Microsoft has made its fortune by intentionally killing off old functionality. You're apparently not old enough to remember when 95 came out and suddenly not one single piece of software any of us owned still worked.

There are games that I only recently went back and finished 20 years later because Linux made it actually relatively easy to run them... and I'm still not really sure how I would try to do that on a modern Ms OS, when the thing was written specifically to run on an MS os originally.

Here's another thing... when we talk about doing things on the Linux command line, the commands we are typing haven't changed appreciably since Ronald Reagan was president. They didn't have to, because they work.

Nobody thought to make those 1970s technology programs have rounded corners or transparent panes, or give them a metro interface, because those are fucking stupid ideas to begin with. If someone did think to do that, someone else would have said gee, all that unnecessary crap is going to require regular bugfixes, and someone else would have explained that it's a fucking stupid idea for TWO reasons.

The fundamental ideas behind Linux have been around since 1972 and they work and don't need constant fucking around. I can do things in Linux like find all instances of a search string in 10,000 different files across a whole folder structure and use the list of matching files as the basis of another command to replace a totally different phrase. Not only can I do it, but other advanced Linux users reading this think that would be trivial, and the non advanced users know stuff like that is possible and could figure it out based on me only giving the clue 'use backquotes'.

This isn't even software I'm talking about. This is inherent to the Linux OS.

And not only is the above totally impossible without 3rd party tools on Windows, Microshaft can't even keep the search files functionality consistent from one OS to the next.

Making software that doesn't require developers to fuck with it constantly isn't at all difficult. All you need is developers who don't think they have to fuck with it constantly.

!

I'm loving Windows 10, I just upgraded recently and aside from the long download and setting up, everything's perfect!

Personally as far as appearance, and layout I was 100% happy with Windows XP.

I have windows 7 now, don't plan to upgrade it, I turn off all the slick UI stuff anyway.

Which is the ONLY reason I installed windows on my new machine.. There's a handful of games I want to play. I needed a new computer (and or) a new console, well, those aren't cheap either and pc's are much more powerful.. So I got a pc for gaming that will run linux for everything else.

It does suck because I HATE windows or anything else MS produces. I also don't have time to wait for things anymore since I've used os-x for 10 years. Windows has a habit of 'thinking' but not showing that it's 'thinking' so I've got my finger close to the reset button and suddenly it's done with whatever it's been doing.... Windows SUCKS. Used to be in w95 that those progress bars wouldn't move then shoot to 100% in a second.. I was like WHY, in 1995. These days, they figure... Ah well if we can't make that bar represent anything we'll just KEEP IT MOVING forever. This really sucks, when it's looking for updates, I don't have a clue, if it's even doing anything. #$^#$%^#%$#%$&$^ but I need windows to play fallout 4. :(

Virus/malware scanners should just include w10 on their lists.

Was that the era before anybody expected new features, supported new hardware, or was interconnected on the internet and letting anybody in the world hit the machines?
I remember very well the time software did not have upgrades. It was a glorious time. I remember software pretty much always worked, ok you had an occasional hard crash of some software... BUT you still have those, despite the updates. The only thing updates really do for me is piss me off when some automatic updater thinks it can just pop up while I'm doing something else full screen. Regarding the internet, firewall it. There's no need for every stupid app to connect to the web. And in case you are a fan of "nature documentaries" you might want to think about updating your virus/malware scanners but apart from that...

This may surprise you, but before the shovelware/outsource-it-to-India era, most software worked just fine without requiring updates.
I still have a w95 computer here. It's even got it's own internet connection. Does email just fine. Never had an update, never had an issue. Not even sure if they even make malware for w95. :p:p

Want some lube with that ?

I recall ubuntu having some really funny logos, consisting of 3 naked women. I cant talk about them, but they're out there.
