Windows 10?

I've been putting off the upgrade too.

...have 7, don't like 8 (shiny crap at the expense of functionality, seems to me), so I'm assuming I won't like 10.

I'll stick with 7 till they stop doing updates.

You may want to go ahead and download the free Win 10 version upgrade, without actually installing it. Just wait to see how things shake out over time. Just a thought.

Subsequent Windows service packs often shake out some of the much griped about kinks.

I'm still using windows 7, and I like windows 7. I didn't care for windows 8.

So should I update to windows 10 if I didn't like windows 8?

And why is it free? Maybe my tin-foil hat is on too tight, but why has every previous copy of windows been grossly over-priced and suddenly they're giving away free updates on an O.S.? :confused:

Windows 10 is quite different than Windows 8. I actually like Windows 10, coming directly from Windows 7. Everything is basically the same, except the Start Menu now includes an "app" section styled like the full-screen mode of Windows 8. That mode completely went away with 10 from what I can tell.

It also has an "Action Center" which is a message service built into the Taskbar next to the clock. It collects update notifications and can be setup to notify you of social media updates and such. There's some other things like "Tablet Mode" and such, but it doesn't force it upon you like Windows 8 did.

Overall, I like it since it feels more like an improved Windows 7 vs. some mutant reinvention like 8 was. I think it offers a much better transition for Windows 7 users than Windows 8.

So is there a simple way to get rid of the "Get Windows 10" spam in the tool tray?
 
Microsoft is getting more aggressive in pushing people to upgrade to Windows 10. Personally I'd recommend turning off installing updates automatically for windows update that way you can decide which updates you want and don't want (you can do a quick google search and see what others say about each individual update).

I also have Windows 7 and have no intention in switching to 10 (that might change before the year is up but I doubt it). Really unless you're someone who just likes the newest stuff or you want to take advantage of DirectX 12 (pretty sure it's a Windows 10 exclusive) then there's no reason to upgrade in the next 4-5 years (don't remember exactly when Microsoft plans on stopping support for Win7 even longer for Win8).

Main negatives for Window 10 (at least for me), they force the updates. Which is a big negative for me because I like to review the updates before installing them and sometimes they can crash the OS (main reason why I review updates now is because one of the updates was causing constant BSDs). There are also privacy issues with Windows 10 (spying, keylogger etc.). Third reason is lack of Windows Media Center, so if you use that then you shouldn't update.


I wish Linux was a more viable option but they aren't there yet for me, maybe in a few years things will be different.

Do a google search (or some other search engine if you're opposed to google) there are ways to remove that advertisement.

Understatement of the year.. There's only one reason they give away the free update.
