Will Smith just assaulted Chris Rock at the Oscars

Just to be clear: I wasn't watching the Oscars. I am straight, but the internet chatter over this was interesting.

WOW
Just to be clear,, it was a open handed slap.. not a punch.

and justified it seems..

best TV indeed.

(Had I walked that far onstage.. I would have nailed him. )

Gonna have to side with Chris on this one. I get it, in the heat of the moment, Will Smith let his anger get the better of him, but it was pretty uncalled for. He should understand better than anyone that he has made himself toxic for live TV, I don't think anyone is going to want to have a live appearance with him. I will not neglect to acknowledge the incredible pressure that public personalities have to endure that ordinary folks don't have to deal with. You're not really a person anymore, you're a name or a mere steward for that name. So anyway, I feel bad for Will Smith because he's going to pay a heavy price for it. Any man can sympathize with the urge to defend their wife's honor, but Chris is known for his biting and very personal humor, which is directed at the external persona and not at the private person. Everyone knows that's the line he dances on. While it was definitely a biting joke, I would call it toes over the line, not full foot over the line, so it is my opinion that he over-reacted in the passion of the moment. Well I hope they make up, that will be the best outcome.

That was the most scripted thing I've ever seen. They are desperately trying to get people to watch this garbage.

Unless they faked the audio and video feed, that slap landed with authority, I'm shocked Chris Rock didn't at least go down to his knees. Will Smith is no twig and, like I said, the audio and video feed indicate that that slap landed.

But you're right that the network/Hollyweird will definitely cannibalize this for all it's worth to boost their whore-ratings.

The fact that Chris Rock didn't fall to the ground/go down to his knees tells me the whole thing was planned from the start. Smith probably didn't even hit him with all of his strength. The whole thing was designed to create shock value in order to get more people to tune in and give them more views they don't deserve.

It was an open handed slap.
a bitch slap,, in street terms.

It was more insulting than a full Punch.

Hmm, I watched a higher-res version and you might be right. The awkwardness afterwards seems a bit too genuine for a scripted slap, but the slap didn't land as firmly as I thought from the grainy version I saw at first.

Oscars so black. FTR I've seen WWE that looks more real. Chris Rock just stands there with his hands behind his back almost to make sure that he doesn't accidentally defend himself. A pro wrestler I know (small time), told me that while wrestling is scripted it's not "fake" in that they'll really hit each other to make the audience feel it's real. The stunts are pre planned and the outcome pre assured.

The best part of this is that the media hasn't yet formulated a coherent narrative on which side is morally superior so people are left scrambling for themselves. Lol.

I know it's just nonsense, but I find it fascinating. People are literally waiting for authority to tell them how they're supposed to feel about this.

At least they know how they're not supposed to feel--the first time in what, 94 years or so, that somebody slapped somebody during the Academy Awards, and what color are they both?

If I could figure out a way to blame it on Putin I'd be rich overnight.

Black on black crime hasn't been a story ever. That's dog bites man.

But still... the herd mentality is so fascinating to me. Like, "Wow, I'm shocked by this... But I need to know how everyone else is supposed to be seeing this to make sure I'm still morally superior."

That's how presidential primaries work, in a nutshell. No wonder we're so screwed.

But the strangest thing to me is, everybody knows both their names, so you're some kind of alien life form if you just don't give a damn.

Thread winner!

I'm out of +rep for you.

Let's see how the comedy world responds to this. In former years, it would have opened up a floodgate of comedians mocking all three parties, Will, Jada, and Chris, including going out of their ways to make fun of Jada's alopecia just to show they can. I suspect that there are still some out there who haven't totally caved in to cancel culture who will use this as a chance to push back on it and who will be rewarded for it.

If so, then when the dust settles, Will is going to be the one coming out of this looking the most foolish.
