That Nixon and Kissenger were told to hand the US to Mao and the ChiComs on a silver platter.
 
I've been reading some interesting insights into President Allende's overthrow by General Pinochet in 1973. (Chile) Been reading about SAVAK torture in Iran. Typed in 'CIA assassination' and am overwhelmed. Going to give it a rest for tonight. I am sure there are some gems in what I mentioned.

6. Answering toast extemporaneously, secretary agreed fully with Fonmin's description of current international scene. He continued: this was time of important historical transition, particularly difficult for us, which found itself suddenly immersed in world affairs after world war ii and now had to reevaluate premises of its foreign policy. Us nuclear superiority had given way to something approaching nuclear equilibrium. Some of its once dependent allies in Europe and far east were beginning to define independent policies and at times to seek their identity in opposition to us. Post-war economic system was also in state of transition. Us relations with former adversaries had evolved into singular mixture of cooperation and antagonism. Whereas in past, us could overcome most problems by application physical resources, us now had to conduct foreign policy like other states, choosing between priorities, allocating limited resources for seemingly unlimited ends, and bearing in mind that desire and accomplishment didn't always coincide. From these difficulties, us would emerge stronger and more united with that mixture of idealism and good common sense that led to great past achievements. 3. Hoveyda referred to non-aligned intent to create "New World Order", saying that us economists had originated this phrase. I replied that phrase had not been taken up by sug and was a most unfortunate one for non-aligned to take up as their watchword. In any new world trade and monetary order, us and other developed countries had critical role to play and it simply should not be thought that we would accept partisan decisions of one group of countries that did not take into account our interests and those of entire world community.​

7. The minister agreed that the world faces a formidable economic problem which might be aggravated by the financial flows resulting from extraordinarly incrases in petroleum prices. Petroleum prices were not the only cause of the intense inflation the world is suffering. The developed countries bear a larger share of the responsibibility for the mess created because of their greater power and their neglect in doing nothing to remedy the serious problems developing countries have long faced as a result of low commodity prices. The united states certainly was not the only country which should be blamed. He mentioned, for example, the unwise expansionist policy pursued by japan over the years. The minister said that Venezuela recognized its responsiblity in contributing to the creation of a "New World Order" which, hopefully, would remedy the serious economic situation the world faces. Developed countries would have to realize that new types of relationships would be essential. He commented that the New Order could not be created by a small group of ten or some such limited number of countries. The new system would have to result from a broadly based consensus in which most countries would participate.​

Kelani (Syria) believed charter should be revised to reflect new status of UN and changes in world, right of GA to recommend peaceful solution to problem should be respected, and GA should also deal with charter violations. Unlike SC, where five states had veto power, in GA each state had equal responsibility and one vote. Those who today blamed UN for taking decisions on basis of majority should recall UN's recent past when us and small number of countries imposed their will and tyranny. We are reaching the end of an old order. Certainly we are reaching the end of a global economic system which has on the one hand lifted mankind to material levels of well being unknown to us before, while on the other hand, certain aspects of that order admittedly were flawed and in some casesunjust.
