Wikileaks: Snowden may be forced to stay in Russia forever

im curious how these things work. Does the Russian Government give snowden money to live on? Is he appointed a job? Is he in federal protection? I've never really figured out the details of being granted asylum.

If he were smart he would stay in the Ecuadorian embassy in Russia, like Julian Assange is in the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

I thought he was traveling under a different passport than the one the United States cancelled, so he still has one that is valid enough to find sanctuary.

Some would argue against the inhumanity of that.

I, for one, would not be living in an Ecuadoran embassy for the rest of my life. It wouldn't even be a consideration.

i now assume mr. snowden is more upset about this
unexpected twist to things than is mr. putin himself?

And what is the alternative? Go down to Ecuador where the US government sends in a groups of mercenaries to snatch you or assassinated you? He is less likely to have that done in Russia, IMHO.

Being granted asylum means you're free to live there. It doesn't make you a ward of the state, nor does it mean that you can't be arrested and extradited if you venture to a country that is friendly to the nation persecuting you.

His family could send him money, or he could take a job there. Doubt that the Russian government would hire him. :)

Probably so, you are correct. Truth of the matter is that he could be touched anywhere in the world by methods that would be deemed natural or accidental.

I wouldn't be holed up in an Ecuadoran embassy like Assange. That much is a given.

So, early today it seemed that Ecuador granted the asylum.
Now, according to the article is being a hard thing to do.
"The WikiLeaks organization said on Tuesday that U.S. intelligence leaker Edward Snowden may be forced to stay in Russia permanently because Washington is "bullying" possible intermediary countries"

Well it seems that some kind of diplomatic conversation is going on.

According to REUTERS (translated with google) http://lta.reuters.com/article/domesticNews/idLTASIE95O06220130625 :
"Ecuador maintains verbal contact with U.S. on case Snowden: Chancellor
Tuesday June 25 2013 19:57 EDT
QUITO (Reuters) - Ecuador has maintained verbal contact with Washington on the situation of the former contractor of the U.S. security agency Edward Snowden, but wait a written statement said Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino, said on Tuesday the official.

The South American nation analyzes an asylum request Snowden, who weighs an arrest warrant on charges of espionage, and ensured that their decision will be taken responsibly, in good time and listening to the arguments of the United States.

According to a note from the official electronic newspaper The Citizen, Patino said Tuesday in Vietnam "that the U.S. communications were verbal" and left open to the willingness to ask the authorities in Washington a statement in writing".

Also The New York Times has pointed that "Ecuador Risks Trade Problems With U.S. if It Grants Asylum to Snowden"

So let's see what happens next

Snowden knew what he was up against before he started. He did it not do it because it would be easy or that he might be able to pull it off, but because it was the right thing to do. He knew that the things the "government" (mafia) is doing is contrary to the very ideals that all the goons took an oath to uphold (I think it's called "The Constitution") and he knew that things will never change unless the mindless sheeple find out and get angry enough to resist the powers that be. It was a crap shoot on his part and he's doing pretty well so far. The most powerful organized crime syndicate on the planet with trillions in spending power so far has come up short on either apprehending him or killing him. He's got some HUGE balls, that's for sure...
