Why Links Are Broken!!!! Read!!

With all due respect (lolz) to LGF... what's their beef with Ron Paul?? Is it really just the war issue? Because on everything else, he's a lot more legit than any of the other GOP candidates... (re: less gov't, no wasteful spending, pro-free-markets) etc. etc.

Seriously, what's their deal?

We need to get over the whole breaking links thing.

It might actually be BETTER that they see where we're coming from.

My vote is not to bother breaking links.

.

Ever heard of the linkification extension for Firefox? I haven't been noticing the broken links because linkification has been parsing them for me. But does it send referral info?

I am posting a test link below, it will disappear shortly after I click it once.

When my stat report comes in at midnight, we will know if linkification sends referral info.

There is no need to break links. The online polls are not scientific. It doesn't matter where people that vote come from. Coming from a hundred different places is no different than coming from one place.

LOL at LGF neocons that think this means something. Now run off little neocons and repeat the talking points you were given. Ron Paul is crazy! He wants to actually reduce the size of government!! That is a neocon no-no.

Sure, I think the only purpose is to cut "RP bots" (or at least identify them and their % of the poll votes) that come to page with a poll from one place - and the referer information is the only identification of that.

None extension is 'sending referral info'. Your browser does. Your extension can eventually block/change it. I don't know this particular extension you've mentioned, but if you want to see what you browser sends along with your request, install for example livehttpheaders extension. It will show you full header information that your browser sends to the destination host and the header response the server sends back. Apart from checking referer header, it's pretty useful for sniffing flv files at youtube and download them separately using wget or other tools :)

Pardon my lack of semantics, I wanted to know what referral info was being sent from my browser when using this extension by clicking on links parsed by it from this forum.

livehttpheaders extension.

Yes, a handy tool it is. But considering this was a one-time question for me, I'd just rather get the info from my web server.

For those who think they understand the internet soooo well I think it's funny people still talk about "breaking" links... guys there is a CHECKBOX under the 'submit reply' button called "automatically parse links in text" if you uncheck that box it will be non clickable.

DON'T NEED TO BREAK THE LINK! :p

And some people just user FireFox with disabled/changed Referrer header and hate those damn broken links :) So yes, I'm the hater of broken links!

OMGosh - I did not know that - I have learned something new today - Thank you!!

I was going to post a question: --> How?

But then I remembered I was on the Internet. I wish more people would remember that before asking questions.

Then, they could supply information instead of asking questions asking others to supply it.

~~~~~~~~~~~
In firefox:
  • Type about:config into the address bar
  • Scroll down 'til you find network.http.sendRefererHeader
  • Remember or write down the original value
  • Double click it and enter 0 into the box
The browser will now not send a referer header. This can also be done in Opera...
Thanks for posting this no-brainer.
I never use broken links. They're a PITA and serve no valid purpose.
A broken link is nothing more than a lame scheme to mask where you've been directed to a particular site from. Doesn't change the fact, it only hides the fact. Not for me. YMMV
LOL, you're welcome :D
Here's a more flexible way to do it (I should have posted this before):
http://www.stardrifter.org/refcontrol/
Opera should have something as well. Safari 'private browsing' probably handles this stuff too
Message for Internet Explorer folks - please install any decent browser (Firefox/Opera/Safari) and make the web a better place! :D
Some folks started this thread amazed at the ignorance of others concerning referral information sent by their browser. Some new folks then enjoyed this thread amazed at the ignorance of others who did not notice the options available when posting. Still other folks were amazed at the ignorance of those who did not know how to control the referral info being sent by their browser in the first place. Then appears another faction of otherwise fine folks, amazed at the ignorance of those who would want to hide their referral info considering where the referral is coming from. Just about everyone else is entertained by all of the above mentioned folks bumping into each other over and over again for the above mentioned reasons. Progress indeed.
If this is what you all enjoy, please don't let me get in your way. The next post is right down there_vvvv
Personally, I just want to click the link and get moving. If there happens to be anyone else out there who just wants to get moving, regardless of how or why the link was broken...Try out the Firefox extension Linkification, will parse many of the broken links so you can just get to the page without hassle. Your browser will not report referral information with links provided by this extension.
Links...
[Admin Note: Welcome LGF readers! Thanks for stopping by. The forum members here have the freedom of choice to decide if they want to break links or not based on their free will.
Granted it was pretty much just an lgf hit-piece, but the original poster even said the purpose was so that polls couldn't be tracked and people could presumably vote multiple times. This may not be the kind of illegal activity which violates forum rules, but it's definitely not a good overall idea for the campaign.
I am sick of people not understanding why we post broken links!
We do this so they can't track where we are coming from. If they see a couple hundred people voting from this site for Ron in 30min, it makes us look bad.
Please understand the internet!
Link breaking is not a feature of this forum. It's a great problem to have so many people supporting Dr. Paul that are organized on the web, freedom is popular and that is the heart of the Dr. Paul movement. Simple and beautiful. You can learn more about your constitutionally guaranteed freedoms by visiting www.RonPaulLibrary.org and www.RonPaul2008.com. Good day!]
Hope you've healed by now:)
