It seems many of us disagree pointedly about this as well as other presidents. Reagan was a man, but now he is a legend so people don't objectivity look at him or his policies any more.
Few people still care that he insisted trees cause more pollution than cars or all the US nuclear waste produced in a year could be stored under his office desk. He also presided over an expansion of the size of government every year while in office as well as an increase in the national debt over his 2 terms.
He did stand for many admirable things and you can certainly argue he worked very hard to achieve them. "Government is the problem" is a motto I think this campaign could use today.
However, many people have elevated him to legend status, and these are in many cases the people we need voting for Ron Paul. When you become a legend, the facts about you become less important than what the majority of people believe you "stood for."
From my experience in campaigning for Paul, the majority of Americans fall into 2 camps, those who think Reagan is a legend to be revered and those who hate him with almost the same tenacity they hate bush.
Liberals almost all hate him, while conservatives almost all like him. You may have heard Hillary or Barrack say nice things about him, but trust me their base hates these comments and can barely stomach them. Those 2 are already pandering to conservatives because they understand his status among them.
If you've got a liberal, NEVER, EVER, EVER suggest Reagan was good or connect Paul to him. You might get lucky, but I've watched liberals tear apart the slimjims with Reagan on them in front of me once they saw Reagan's picture.
If you're dealing with a conservative, make it seem like Reagan and Paul were best pals. You certainly have a lot of ammunition for this.
