Why is Reagan treated like a god-like figure?

Even as a leftist, I recognize the fact that he was a good president, but why all the leg humping by the candidates and media? Why is being Reagan-esque the litmus test?

Why isn't there a progressive idol that the Democrats worship? Why aren't the Democrats held to a similar litmus test for their progressivism?

every republican wants to be him, ron paul has surpassed him.

There trying to completely erase Bush from everyone's memory.

great communicator, was shot and lived, shuttle disaster, cold war, humor

Reagan,

Was a moral leader, that cared about people, and would reach out and make sense to the common person in the eyes of the public.

Thought to be grandpa, with his jelly bean jar, to all that were younger and thought the be the great communicator, fighting through a cold war with russia, berlin wall, the shuttle disaster...his wife reagan was loved by america for their involvement with america and social values that reached out and lead the evangelical and economic groups agendas.

These were the two most powerful groups in the party they reached. At the time the neo cons were all around him but america wasnt mislead on that agenda. So the party was behind him.

41 was a disaster as well, but there were plenty of awesome Republicans before Reagan. Take Lincoln for example.

Lincoln was anything but awesome. That guy was a friggin' disgrace who had no great love of freedom.

People are always going to look at Lincoln, Washington, and Reagan as political icons. Regardless of their actual politics and how history really stood, you will never convince them that they were not perfection in presidential form. Just go with it. Reagan campaigned for Paul after all. He couldn't be ALL bad.

Well, when you look at the recent 50 years of Republican presidents, you have quite an unfavorble batch.
Little Bush, Papa Bush, Nixon, Ford (nixon's VP)...etc
Pretty much your only option is Reagan, because if you go back too far (like the Taft days), you'll find a brand of republicanism that the modern party hates. The republican party is the war party now, unless we can change that.

Yeah when i hear them invoke Reagan i just zone out. He didn't do anything spectacular he just didn't fock up like the other republicans.

I dont know maybe i just cant get over the whole republican thing. These past 8 years have been shit and when this thing is over Republicans can kiss my ass. (just the neocons) :D

Democrats' idol is Bill Clinton.

Because NONE of the current crop have anything to make themselves stand out (other than RP).

It is amazing... Regan can run for office from the grave.

I am one of the people who says..."I don't care if you think Regan would support you...What are you about...WHat can you do for your country RIGHT NOW?"

Regan this, regan that...Who Cares? I don't!

2 reasons. He didn't blow us up and compared to all other republican presidents in recent history he was the smartest did the least amount of damage. He was forced to accept Bush Sr. has his VP though.

I'm perplexed why people think Reagan was a good president. He was a terrible president! Before he took office in 1981 his people negotiated a release of the hostages in Iran, then there was the whole Iran contra mess. Most people struggled to make ends meet while he was president. Our national debt tripled under Reagan so he could build up our military. Don't even get me started on the whole "star wars" lie. Ugh I could go on forever about what a horrible president he was.
