Can someone comment though on spending. Honestly, the thing I hate most about the government is stealing from my pocket book. Lets just say that hypothetically government spending was cut 50% and taxes were cut to what ever level made the revenue 50% of what it used to be. The taxes would probably have to be cut even more than 50% because of the massive economic boom that would follow. My guess is that if this happened the Dow would easily hit 40,000.

Reagan did what he could with what he had to work with. He could have done better but his policies were probably the single most significant reason the cold war ended peacefully. Reagan knew how to stand up to our enemies in a way that earned their respect. That seems to be a lost art in politics these days.

His leadership skills are what carried him even when his policies didn't work out so well. He knew how bring out the best in Americans and that is what he will be remembered for the most. In my opinion he was one of the greatest political leaded in the history of modern civilisation. He won't be remember that way because he didn't fight a war, he avoided one.

The Soviets would have run out of money no matter what at some point. How they dealt with it and how quickly it happened had quite a lot to do with US cold war policy.

Whenever something happens in the world there is always someone who makes money off of it. For too many people that is all the evidence necessary to prove a conspiracy.

Your right, they would have run out of money regardless of who was president. I once did a rough calculation on the amount of nuclear power we amassed during the "cold war" . somewhere around the equivilant of 500 lbs of TNT per person for every living being on earth. Hmm....why did we need that much? Other than the folks making the nukes made an absolute killing on it. Reagon certainly had something to do with that.

The thing I liked about Reagan was that at least he gave a positive feeling about the country (whether it was an act or not). If there's any one greatest thing he accomplished it was restoring America's confidence which Vietnam had shaken and I think that's why people remember him fondly.

One thing that does strike me is how some of the people that would criticize Ron Paul for a lack of oversight on a newsletter also idolize Reagan. I still recall Iran-Contra where Reagan wasn't even aware of the extent of (and at one point outright lied about) the arms deals going on with Iran right under his nose. Seems to me that selling missiles to a country hostile to the US and known for sponsoring terrorism is far more serious than a few objectionable remarks in print, but some people seem to have selective judgment.

Making money when something happens is obviously ok. Making something bad happen SO you can make money on it, now that is just plain evil.
