This past week the RNC released a presidential debate schedule that includes most of the mainstream media and the Spanish language channel Telemundo. Noticeably absent is a move to reach out to African Americans.
In 2008, there was such a debate on PBS hosted by Tavis Smiley that was attended by Ron Paul, Mike Huckabee, Alan Keyes, and others. The more establishment candidates at the time, such as Mitt Romney and John McCain, had scheduling conflicts. If such a debate were to take place today then it would be considered a non-sanctioned debate. Any candidate attending such a debate would then not be allowed to participate in any of the following sanctioned debates.
We can make educated guesses at which prospective 2016 candidates would attend and which would not. Likely to attend would be Mike Huckabee, Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, Ben Carson, and Rick Santorum. Mitt Romney would no doubt have a scheduling conflict, as would Jeb Bush, and Chris Christie.
Are our 2016 candidates so weak kneed that the RNC believes they cannot countenance a debate like the one from 2008? What candidates of ours, if any, are willing to buck the RNC and say right now that they will not abide by the silly rules. Let’s see Reince Priebus and the RNC penalize candidates who attend a “black debate.”
