Why are 90% of coin dealers complete a--holes?

Has anyone else noticed this? I'm inclined to say it's higher than 90% but I haven't dealt with enough of them to know for sure. Is it just part of the trade to be a complete asshat or what?

No it is absolutely true.

To sell at today's price would mean that they take a loss. They know that the underlying metal is going to go up, so they're just not going to let loose of any stock until it's profitable for them to do so. What would you do if you paid 30% of today's prices? Would you sell, or would you hold?

Who said anything about prices? I just said they are mostly assholes in general regardless of prices.

I guess it is how you present yourself. I've meet many coin dealers and I've not stumbled on anyone I couldn't strike up a pleasant conversation with. Actually, coin stores seem to be one of my favorite places for conversations about monetary policy and economics. But, hey I live in the south! :D

You should check out rec.coins (Usenet) sometime. That was my first experience with coin dealers.

You're right. THey're asses.

blah on coins.

gun shop dealers, those guys are usually pretty nice.

most guns hold value fairly well too

That would make for a pretty big hole in my back yard to hide them in. lol. ;)

The thing with collectibles is, it can be harder to part with them when you need the money. Most gun collectors I know would hate to let go of some of their finer rifles because there can be more of an attachment to them. Coins are easier to part with.

just mho.

I have two dealers in my area. I usually go to the same one because it's closer and the dealer has cheaper prices.

The dealer is fair to everyone and knows his stuff. I actually learn a lot from him. Today I went in to buy some silver and we ended up talking for an hour (mostly him ranting).

The other dealer just does his own thing - I don't have any problems with him.

What did he rant about?

Any substance within his hour-long rant which you would be willing to share?

Uhmm... Biden is a liar and a jerk, Dems try to pull the wool over everyones eyes, windfall taxes on gas companies are unconstitutional and stupid, taxes the rich never worked in the past, tax cuts are really good for companies, the US is the only country where gold is tied to oil, silver is going up in the cash market but not the futures open market, and nobody wants to pay the extra 200 bucks for the 100 ounce bars. :p

hah

The guy I go to has an amusing shop: It's mostly collectible trains. All the coins/bullion he has are in the back of the shop you have to tell him what you want. When I first went in there I said: "Is this the coin shop? Where are the coins?"

coin dealer: "THIS IS A BULLION DEALER. WE DON'T SELL COLLECTIBLES HERE."

me: "oh, ok. C-could I get a tube of american silver eagles please?"

coin dealer: "Sure."

*transaction occurs*

me: *opens the tube to look at the coins*

coin dealer: "NOBODY'S EVER DONE THAT BEFORE."

me: "heh."

Wow, I'm glad that you brought this up....I feel better now.

A few months back I was calling Coin shops looking for 90% silver as an inflation hedge. This is pretty much exactly what I told the dealers because I really didn't know much more about coins than this.

I thought that anyone trying to make money by selling would be able to fill in the gaps by recommending items that they had on stock. However, almost every store I called treated me like I was some sort of Idiot. I was almost convinced that people really didn't buy coins for the silver investment and that I was asking for something which was unreasonable.

I try hard to be personable and most people treat me decently even if I ask stupid questions (which I do frequently). I'm glad that I have an abundance of self-esteem. The dealers that I talked to knocked mine down for a day or two.

I'm really thankful for the advice that has been given to me on this forum (you gave me advice yourself RCA :) ) I probably would have given up on Silver if it wasn't for this.

By the way, I never bought anything from the shops that I called - I probably will never deal with any of them.
