A Whole Foods supermarket in New York has removed a sign that used a drawing of President Barack Obama to advertise a sale on chicken after complaints that the ad was offensive.

The sign outside the supermarket on Manhattan's Upper West Side, featuring an apparent caricature of Obama advertising an upcoming sale on whole organic chickens, outraged neighbor Woody Henderson.

"There are certain things that have been used to put down black people — watermelon, fried chicken," he said.

Jason Nunez of the Bronx said, "Even if he's not the president, you're going to have an African-American promoting the sale of chicken? They can do better than that."

Why is liking chicken or watermelon racist? Who doesn't like them?

Get this...A white person and the white people around them created KFC! You know where else KFC is popular? Asia! Asians love KFC. Wait...could it be that everyone loves chicken?

Sounds like free advertising for Whole Foods, they mentioned the price and the SALE. brilliant

If I lived there, I would bought some chicken, that's a very good price, but pussied-down America needs to grow some skin or get their brains examined.

If the watermelon was a good deal I would of bought that too... Want an awesome drink? ...try Watermelon mojitos

Dumb...dumb...dumb...dumb....what about all the McDonald's commercials with Black people advertising their Chicken McNuggets? What a candy ass country.

Where did the stereotype that all black people are in love with fried chicken, watermelon and collard greens originate, anyway?

Ahh.

I think it's more of a southern stereotype, and many black slaves were originally in southern states. The stereotype is probably founded on the fact that southern slave-owners watched their slaves get excited and rejoice over watermelons or fried chicken especially, which was considered a more "high class" southern food at the time. Minstrel shows probably helped to popularize the stereotype as well.

That being said, people are way too PC and easy to overreact. That story is laughable.

I just wonder if the complainers ever stopped to realize that using Obama has nothing to do with race at all?! I mean, if it was about race, wouldn't any Black model do? And, are they using Obama to advertize the watermelon also, and thus lend credence to the racist claim? Maybe the meaning here has something to do with Obama's character and not his racial identity?

I think at this point this is a topic that we can sit back and laugh at past stereotypes like this if it isn't done in an obviously demeaning way.

That said, if I managed that store I probably wouldn't have allowed it to be put up. Potentially bad for business (though they say any press is good press so who knows)

I don't think these people would have a problem with the ad. :D

The dude with the dreads would probably consider them self hating blacks.

Obama fried chicken and pizza. This restaurant is in Harlem, I've passed by more times than I can count. Why is there an uproar over whole foods, but there was never an uproar over this place (that I am aware of)?

Dave knows whats going on. My theory is that moronic issues like this are used to divide.

Because the southern slave owners didnt like fried chicken, collard greens, and watermelon themselves

That's not what I was implying at all. I stated that those foods were very popular in the south, but that southern slave owners made fun of how excited their slaves would get when given watermelon as a treat or even fried chicken on rarer occasions. That coupled with how they were depicted in minstrel shows may have been what cemented the stereotype.
