Who is more conservative?

Although there are similarities between the two (including both speaking out in favor of federalism), Ron Paul is by far the more conservative:

Ron Paul has NEVER voted for an unbalanced budget.

Ron Paul has NEVER voted to infringe the First Amendment (he even sued to try to block McCain-Feingold), while Fred Thompson was one of the biggest supporters of McCain-Feingold. Fred even said as recently as September that he was "proud" of helping pass McCain-Feingold (http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=22525).

Compare Gun Owners of America's reviews of Fred's gun record and RP's gun record:

I'm not sure what Fred Thompson is for. Every time he is in a debate he spends half of his time cracking jokes, then drones on for the rest of the time without actually making a point. At least other candidates make their position clear. Fred Thompson is like the Republican version of Hillary. He opens his mouth and words come out, but doesn't ever actually say anything.

Fiscally, Ron is the most conservative. He's never voted to raise taxes, never voted for an unbalanced budget, and even returns part of his Congressional office budget to the treasury yearly.

Ron has no truck with lobbyists, while Fred has been one -- lobbying for abortion groups and Jean Bertrand Aristide, the communist dictator of Haiti, who paid Fred to lobby Clinton to send troops to restore his rule after he was ousted by his own people for keeping them in line by burning them to death with gasoline-soaked tires.

Socially, Ron is the most conservative. He's been steadfast in his pro-life views, while Fred has, as was mentioned, lobbied for abortion groups. Ron's got an A+ from the Gun Owners of America, while Fred voted for the Lautenberg Amendment and for a measure that would put parents in jail for allowing their children to touch an "assault weapon".

It's clear who is the most conservative. Fred talks a good game, but he doesn't stand by his stated principles. On the other hand, when the Club for Growth analyzed the conservatism of the candidates, their criticism of Ron was that his conservatism was too pure and he was too unwilling to compromise his principles to play the Washington game.

Thank you for your response. No i'm not a troll, but my dad told me Fred Thompson was the most conservative, I've always viewed Paul as extremely conservative, but my dad knows a lot about politics; just wanted to get other opinions

Ron Paul is the most fiscally conservative person in the race and probably in congress as well. But he's really a libertarian more than anything else, and an individualist as opposed to a collectivist.

No disrespect meant, but your dad has probably been getting his opions from MSM his whole adult life.

I am a libertarian. Ron Paul is "conservative" on about half of his issues and "liberal" on others, but so are we. I feel that Ron Paul only runs as a Republican because third parties don't get due attention.

However, I haven't been a libertarian for very long, so I suppose my observations could still need some tweaking.

Hasn't Fred only actually served 1 term as a senator? not much record to go by, if that's accurate.
