U.S. Foreign Aid to Ethiopia to Continue Under New Structure
July 8, 2025
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa announced that the United States will continue its critical USAID programs in Ethiopia, focusing on humanitarian aid, global health, and food security.
In a statement released yesterday, the embassy explained that this realignment, enacted under President Trump and Secretary Rubio, aims to better serve U.S. national interests through foreign assistance.
Earlier in June, Borkena reported that U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Ervin Massinga addressed the continuation of U.S. humanitarian aid, particularly in light of previous cuts to USAID programs. The Ambassador revealed that the majority of assistance is being reinstated. “Eighty-nine percent of the previously programmed humanitarian aid will continue.
Ambassador Massinga also gave explanations regarding a strategic shift in U.S. engagement, moving towards private sector development. “We’re moving from assistance to private sector engagement,” he explained, citing existing partnerships with Ethiopian Airlines and Boeing, as well as support for infrastructure projects like the new Bishoftu airport.
