Pot Smokers Just Got Some Bad News From Trump Administration

In a speech to law enforcement in Arlington, Virginia, on Wednesday Attorney General Jeff Sessions said smoking marijuana is a “life-wrecking dependency” and rejected the idea of legalization as a method of combatting America’s opioid crisis.

Here’s what Sessions said:

“I realize this may be an unfashionable belief in a time of growing tolerance of drug use. But too many lives are at stake to worry about being fashionable. I reject the idea that America will be a better place if marijuana is sold in every corner store. And I am astonished to hear people suggest that we can solve our heroin crisis by legalizing marijuana – so people can trade one life-wrecking dependency for another that’s only slightly less awful. Our nation needs to say clearly once again that using drugs will destroy your life.”

His comments follow other anti-marijuana statements by members of the Trump administration. In February, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said he anticipates that states will be subject to “greater enforcement” of federal marijuana laws.

On the campaign trail, President Trump expressed support for medical marijuana, but hasn’t fully weighed in on state decriminalization efforts.

But Sessions appears to be the main roadblock: During his confirmation hearing, it surfaced that he once joked that he thought the Klu Klux Klan “was OK until I found out they smoked pot.”
