Looking at North Korea: "it's illegal to leave without government approval".
U.S. citizens don’t need a passport to book an international flight. However, you do need one to check in for your flight and get on a plane.
Is the OP article a sales-pitch toward Global Digital ID?
REAL ID will be mandated by May 2025 for all Domestic travel as well. Amerika is no longer a free country, and no better than North Korea in the right to travel without "papers please" ie: government approval.
