IIRC there was story out last week that the Feds were getting ready to prosecute banks and mortgage lenders for asking potential borrowers about their immigration status.
It rings a bell (though I'm not sure if the steeple was RPFs or Twitter).
Anyway,
back in October, DOJ & the Federal Reserve's "Consumer Financial Protection Bureau" jointly issued statements (DOJ
here, CFPB
here) huffing and puffing about how banks aren't allowed to reject loan applications
solely on the basis of immigration status.
Then
a week or so ago, U.S. House rep. Any Ogle (R-TN) decided to introduce legislation huffing and puffing about how banks
are actually allowed to consider immigration status after all - just not "solely", but merely as one factor among others (in a farrago of factors that may or may not run afoul of myriad federal regulations, depending on the political preferences of whomever happens to be overseer of the executive plantation at the moment - see, for example, the aforementioned joint statements).
As far as I can tell, Ogle's proposal would just amount to "clarification" wankerism that wouldn't actually do or change anything (though I suppose it might be useful for campaign rhetoric & fundraising purposes). IOW: Unsurprisingly, Republicans are far too ballsless to dare assert that banks should indeed be allowed to reject loan applications solely on the basis of immigration status (or for any other reason, while we're at it).
