What the Hell Ron Paul?

Also, to all RP supporters, dont get too caught up in the rhetoric. Keep an eye on Paul. ALso, dont be so damn optimistic. Limited government isnt about the easy stuff, ending war/inflation/corportate welfare. It is also about ending welfare to very poor people, it is about letting people make mistakes, sometimes very bad ones that will lead them into a life of poverty. Realize also the repeal of drug laws wont make everything magical. There will still be drug users, they will be sick and suffering and poor, and the libertarian still cannot justify government action. My words to libertarians, face it, limited government isnt all candy and prosperity, bad shit will still happen, and you have to be willing to stomach that. You cant promise perfection, just keep that in mind.

A good thoughtful post, I'm sorry people here cant take people questioning Ron Paul on his principles.

My take: The earmarks. I know Paul says "earmarks do not increase the taxes" but I think they do. As in if allot of earmarks pass this year then the budget planners for next year will anticipate that and increase the tax budget. Its not like theyll say, "Oops, lets cut down on the military budget to accomondate all these earmarks" Instead they just increase the budget so they can spend money on earmarks and the military. That atleast my take on it.

As for taxes. All taxes are not equal and I think it is important to rate them on how much damage they do to the free market (remember the free market is what makes us prosperous). Some taxes are worse than others. People here seem to think that corporate taxes or capital gains taxes are not that bad. But I would say that the capital gains tax is one of the worst taxes as its effectively a tax on capitalism itself. People will be disccouraged from making profits. The whole driving force of capitalism is the want to make profits. (The fact that there is a capital gains tax is one reason why we cant have a market based hard money like gold. Because as the dollar looses value against the gold, that will be taxed like its a capital gain instead of the fact that the true value of the hard money has not changed at all.)

I think the indirect taxes, the ones on domestic consumtion are the least destructive. Trade barrier taxes are very destructive as those usually lead to protectionist trade wars, wich effectively shink the market from a global one to a domestic one.

I would agree that when libertarian and constitutional principles come into conflict, it should be the libertarian ones that prevail.

Ron Paul stands for some stuff that i disagree with. His talks about the evils of manufacturing jobs going overseas, about the importance to close down borders to prevent illegal immigration, about the evils of fractional reserve banking (and his supports of some ancient "real" gold coin standard as opposed to a more practical gold standrad that pegges paper money to the price of gold). I dont agree with his positions on those issues and i wish there was more discussion about such disagreements without being labeld a troll.

As you said I think it is important that people take aboard the darker side of libertariansim and small govt aswell. Poor helpless people that could not contribute to society by getting a job would suffer. Drug abusers and the mentally ill would probably be homeless in larger numbers. I think this is a price worth paying for a a freer and more prosperous society, but many people here dont like to admit that there are any costs at all. There is a cold side to Ron Pauls policies and we better come to terms with it. As long as society as a whole is better off we should accept that there will be people that will suffer in a free libertarian society.

Cheers

this guy seems like some one who maybe watched a debate or read a myspace page and supports ron paul based on what little he is allowed to say in the media. Ron Paul explains in a fairly thorough manner his plans for this country. You just have to let your fingers do the walking.

Some people may think that this campaign, other than its educational value, was a total washout. However, Ron's ridiculed gold backed currency idea came back to bite the IRS in the ass. Check it out:

The question is, how many gold coins are in circulation? You know the IRS and the banks will be taking them out of circulation after this court decision. However, I believe Ron's 1985 law requires the mint to make a certain amount available every year.

This demonstrates that Ron Paul was right all along about gold backed currency.
Who's laughing now?

He raises a few legitimate points its annoying to see all these republican retards here scream troll whenever someone criticizes their messiah.

Um, it is quite obvious that he is not familiar with RP's platform. In fact, he seems (to me, anyway) to simply be repeating John McCain's attack points against him.

One would assume that if the OP honestly were a "long time Ron Paul supporter" that he would at least have some basic familiarity with his platform.

And the fact that his misstatement of Ron Paul's platform mimics John McCain's propagandistic and distorted attacks against Ron Paul, kinda seal the deal.

Now I've never called anybody on this board a troll in my entire posting history here. But if I had to make a determination on this guy, I'd vote troll. He seems more like a McCain operative than any "long time Ron Paul supporter" I have ever met.

If he said that he was brand new to Ron Paul, then I could understand that his perception of the Ron Paul platform could easily be distorted by media bias and misconstrued according to John McCain's distortions. In that case he would clearly not be a troll. But the claim to being "a long time Ron Paul supporter" while being woefully ignorant to the fundamental points of Ron Paul's platform, tends to make it difficult for me to suspend disbelief.
