What is the end result of capitalism?

I've been pondering this for the last hour or so... What is the point, the grand scheme, the end goal of capitalism as a person existing within it?

Is it to simply accumulate as much wealth as you can for yourself and family? Is that the end goal? And when is enough wealth enough?

I'm not trying to say Capitalism is bad, but I do feel that we need to as a race of humans start to think that this planet, and it's people are more connected than just competitors trying to take our resources... we are more than that...

Should we not try and help others to live happy as we do? I can't help but feel that capitalism's sole goal is to pit one another against each other in order to claim a resource, or wealth...

What does constant compeition do for us as a people, a society in the long run? Why do we as individuals have to compete on an every day basis... Should we not as a society ever do anything to benefit everyone?

When I boil down the end result of capitalism, I feel the end result is for everyone to act and live as if on an island, isolated from fellow man in an eternal struggle to gather resources in direct competition with your neighbor.

That doesn't feel like the path to true happiness... Where are we going as a global society if Capitalism is our greatest attempt to bring freedom and liberty to the world... Will our legacy simply be that we installed greed and isolationism through out the country, where we look at everyone trying to compete for what we have, instead of looking at others as to what we can do together and what we can achieve together?

Looking at our research and R&D facilities, and how that business works, we used to encourage universities to develop new things, now instead of sharing ideas, we horde them in order to turn a profit... which could be why we actually had major medical breakthroughs in the past like curing Polio, and other major diseases and now all we can do it put bandaids on the medical mysteries. Instead of sharing information, we have created silos of secretive business where there sole goal is to discover something they can make a profit from, not curing or eliminating disease.

I do not think based on the teachings of the Bible, that the big J intended humanity to turn against one another in order to compete for every little scrap of resource available, nor did he intend for us to shun helping those in need and doing whatever it takes to shield yourself from society in your own attempt to aquire wealth...

I'm confused to see what the end result, the end game, the impact that capitalism will have on humanity, and if it is a good thing. I look towards the future, and feel that a society that works in order to make life better for everyone is a better place than a society that does whatever it takes to horde wealth at the expense of everyone else...

Are we forgetting the parable of the slaves and the talents?

Well, when we want to see what we can achieve as humans, we tend to have contests like the Olympics. And competition encourages participants to train hard and become the best they can be. Many of the vaccines you mentioned were developed by people racing for the glory of being the first with a cure...

Yes, capitalism leads to the promotion of the greedy. Eventually, it leads to the promotion of greed. But if greed motivates, use it. If life gives you lemons, what do you do? Got some sugar?

The main thing we all like about capitalism is that it is sustainable. Refuse to reward the hard workers and you won't have any. So, I would say the end result of capitalism is either that it is killed by creeping socialism, or it has no ugly 'end'...

But then this suggests that we had no growth, innovation, workers, or motivation through out history.

I think prior to the greed dominated history, people did good things for the right reasons. People learned how to build better houses becauswe they wanted to provide better houses for their community, people learned and tried to make better weapons for the same reasons...

I honestly believe that the motivation for most people is actually in their surroundings. You do something better for your family, your friends, your community, your town, your state, your country.

Church is so anti-capitalism, and yet it is chruch that brings so many people together, so much happiness to so many people's lives. Everyone coming together for the common good is much better than competing for the best Church and not sharing it with anyone becuase you earned it.

Capitalism is NOT about greed!!!!

Capitalism is about MUTUALLY SATISFACTORY transactions, which enable productivity and an improved standard of living FOR EVERYONE INVOLVED!

Sorry to yell, but this is a very dear topic to me. When you agree to the dogma that Capitalism is inherently associated with greed, as far as I'm concerned you've surrendered to the most effective stronghold of Marxist ideology.

Yes, self-interest is a significant motivating factor in any transaction - or any action at all, for that matter. But of course, that does not exclude charity or morality; that statement simply means that, given the opportunity, people's actions will reflect their desires and their will. Or, put more simply: people tend to do what they want when they are free to do so!

Well, anyone who wants to be charitable should be free to do so, and no one is free to be charitable if everyone is required to be charitable! Therefore, far from being detrimental to it, only Capitalism - or as I prefer to think of it, Economic Freedom - enables charity.

I'm too busy right now to keep going about this, but I hope I'm making some sense here.

You sound like my Marxist PoliSci professor. Go learn what "capitalism" is before you jump to any conclusion. Head to mises.org for the proper definition of "capitalism".

Your making sense, and I agree that Freedom in making business desisions is key. I only question if we have lost our way with taking it far, from shipping jobs overseas so a few can make more while the rest lose all.

If I view the human race as a society, I feel our primary goal should be about up lifting everyone, and empowering everyone to be happy in their own vision. Not competing and overrunning everyone in order to simply prop myself up...

I do not think communism is the right way either, frankly your right, no system is perfect...

"Shipping jobs overseas" means that someone overseas can out-compete you in the labor pool. Maybe it is because of government-imposed minimum wage and so on and so forth.

Well said. I was going to write a lengthy response but you covered most of what I wanted to say. Thanks.

Ok, I agree, Capitalism is the best most direct route to freedom... I think the issue I have with it, was the enabling of the freedom to corrupt and coerce people into making the playing field un-fair, and therefore less free.

Yeah, well, it is the least subject to that kind of abuse out of all possible systems of economy. If you're looking for an economic system that will prevent all people from ever doing bad things to each other, then you're just being ridiculous. ;)

Liberty is not only a means, but an end in itself.

There is your answer.

Greed? Isn't everything about greed. If not greed of money, then greed for power. Even religion, as represented by the church, is a greed for power and control over man.

It depends on each individual who supports it to decide why they support it and if that support is justified. I support it because it allows me to accumulate wealth without limit through the application of my own labor and creativity by producing things of value. I would expect others to support it for the same reason. It's system that harmonizines with individual's desire to own the what he produces and to be able to profit from selling it, in order to have the wealth to sustain his life (life extention technology is expensive) and live a life of maximum luxury. The competitive aspect is not negative. It just makes it more fun.

It really just sounds like your reacting to the rhetoric of anti-free market peoples.

Its not like people would just cease to do selfless things, and be 100% selfish. This isn't an Ayn Rand novel we're talking about here.

If you want to build bridges with people, strengthen communities, give charity, then do it. And plenty of people do, especially the more prosperous a society becomes.

Some people, when they feel materially satisfied, tend to want to be more social and emphasize the importance of money less because they've already got enough of it. When people can make a comfortable economic living, I think they are more likely to delve into the spiritual side of life.

Ever hear of the stories of American college grads visiting communist Russia and China?
It was basically like this:
Americans to Russians: "its so peaceful and serene here" (when commenting on the lack of advertisements)
Russians to Americans: "wait... so you all have cars in America? GTFO!!!"
