What gives paper money its actual value - lol

Do you keep any FRNs on hand in case of emergencies or if you need something from someone who only accepts FRNs?

Nah , not much , usually , but I have a 6k line of credit I can write checks with if I needed to , a no interest credit card with a $500 limit , the Mrs only takes cash and checks for her sewing business and she deposits that in a checking account , two other high limit credit cards that I only use for airline tickets and pay off if I use it when the statement comes , or for $50 the local travel agent will do it and let you pay cash . I can cash out silver , copper , nickel , gold at the local coin shop three days a week , lead , aluminum , steel , brass , copper at the local scrap yard five days a week etc.

I keep FRN's,currently $4,500 although it has been much higher,in an ammo can.
I keep them in $500 to a freezer bag and date them.I have never in at least ten years gotten more or less than $500,cash at a time from my bank.
I get $500 from my bank when my wallet gets light and replace it with the oldest money in the ammo can.
If FRN's are worthless tomorrow,It don't matter if they are in my bank or my ammo can.
If there is a run on the banks,or a hurricane,or a 3 week power outage or something,I still have my ammo can.

Thanks! I'll know where to look next time!

I have three ammo cans , two are decoys ( empty) , the other is full of ammo , but there are random ammo boxes in every room, jacket , vest, suspenders and outbuilding etc. I have a safe , it is empty too , but there probably is a weapon on top , LOL . I keep nothing that anyone would be interested in :) , matches , files , awl ,axe , saw , shovel , rake , hoe , seeds , ammo , rifle , shotgun , bow , arrows , traps, hatchets , tomahawks ,filet knives , hooks , bobbers , skinning knives , cleavers, maul etc. Gift from my Father , better to know and not need it than to need it and not know . So , I just kept doing it , just in case. Most people will have no use for my things as they will not know how to use them ( probably have never eaten potatoes , green beans , onions the same day from the earth ) . My garage was broken into once , at another home yrs ago , nothing was taken , place was full of nothing but hand tools, same thing happened to the guy down the way. No place in my County but one they could have pawned it anyway , and he is a friend of mine.

All of the money I no longer have in my ammo can when it was more than $4500,I spent on guns.
Not joking,I had $11,000 in there at one time. Not that that is the only money I have spent on cash on the barrelhead,no paperwork or even 'what's your first name' gun purchases in the last 20 years.

Come at me Bra! :D

Thank you for elaborating on your position. "Personal perceptions" are valid but can also be wrong. People see for example that the price of bananas went up by ten cents a pound. They notice that because they buy bananas often. This may lead to the perception by them that all prices are rising quickly. But bananas are only a tiny part of what they spend their money on. At least one third of the typical household goes into rent/ mortgages. Those tend to rise much more slowly than food prices but take a much larger chunk of the family budget. Food is closer to ten percent of the budget. They see food rising but don't see that other things they really spend most of their money on are not rising as quickly as food so they will over-estimate how much their overall costs are really rising.

No. They'll see the rent rising and feel it nice and hard, especially if they aren't of the privileged class. They'll not be able to buy bananas the second half of the month. The ones that inflation really robs have a nice, solid handle on just how much less their dollars are worth today than yesterday. They may be a little confused about the fact that this means the dollar is really worth less. But they can tell you to the last item how much they now have to do without to keep from going broke on the twenty-third instead of the thirtieth of the month.

Come on down out of your ivory tower some time, Z2.0, and see how people live.

Well , you insulted me with your neg rep , but fact remains , I keep no paper money , nor are you the only ill mannered person I have ever meet .

I can promise two things: (1) I never mean to insult, and (2) I will not be personally insulted by anyone's actions on this forum. I'll give a positive rep when I get the chance based your witty comment here. In particular, if I misinterpreted your comment as evasion, then I apologize - and you should send a negative rep my way (I probably deserve it).

With respect to the underlying argument that applied at the time, my purpose was to show that Federal Reserve Notes DO have value. Indeed, the problem is that they do not have value! There is something fundamentally wrong with fancy pieces of paper distributed by a sociopathic ruling class having value. The fact that you were able to accumulate the notes and acquire so many goods in trade demonstrates their value beyond question. I understand your wanting to rid yourself of excess FRN's. Even I put my long term savings into precious metals.

But , they have no value to me , I have , for yrs , successfully dumped them for things that will allow my family to continue on without me when I am gone in a manner that they may care for themselves and have some wealth that is independent of any devalued or reconstructed paper money.
