a very different time and situation
Virtually every person who pulled up stakes and moved to the "new world" 250~500 years ago was physically productive and in fairly close contact with reality. Today, most americans are not physically productive, and so intellectually confused and corrupted that no term seems adequate to describe. I have thought about this problem many times over the years, and have come to understand how "frontiers" are so much more compatible with liberty and individualism - especially with no "shining light" example in the world to offer obvious incentive and guidance. No, the next serious location for liberty and individualism is outer space. Until we can inhabit the asteroid belt, lovers of liberty will probably have very slim pickens and very imperfect choices.Good thing our founding fathers didn't cut and run when faced with tyranny.
