Whale Wars the show: Your thoughts

there's not going to be any whales or dolphins left when global warming, caused by the diesel/gasoline engines of the ships being used to protect the whales, destroys the ocean's ability to sustain life.

/sarcasm.

These people wanna save whales. Let them.

Japan's whale meat 'industry' is not that big economic wise. It's specialized and elitist to eat this meat. They can survive without it, and besides, they are killing these whales in a sanctuary. Thats considered poaching.

I have watched the entire first season for "Whale Wars" and currently on the second season and I will say a few things...

1. Yes it's hyped as hell (the show I mean) but they kinda have to cause there is a lot of down time when filming a full season like that.

2. Yes the captain is an attention whore (as greenpeace has claimed for one of the reasons why he was kicked out

3. Yes the crew is all volunteer so they are total scrubs when it comes to running a ship like that.

4. Yes the Japanese are royal douchebags

5. Yes, I totally agree with the protesters in their actions and mission

6. Yes, I respect them for putting their lives on the line for a cause they believe in

7. There is a profound analogy that I noticed in the episode of whale wars that I watched tonight that I will make a different thread to discuss.

the whalers just really need to do some damage to the attacking vessels....trying to stay afloat will occupy more of their time then messing with them.

This page is interesting.

Sorry, bub, but yes they do.

People claim all sorts of fucked up shit as being a-ok because it's part of "tradition" or "culture."

Fuck that.

Some things are just wrong no matter how many people do it or how long they have been doing it.

If your culture is the cause of several species going extinct and throwing off the balance of whole ecosystems, then you had better change that part of your culture soon.

Another example is honor killings. Some people say "No one has the right to criticize the family culture of another people." YES THEY DO. If you killed your daughter because she acted like a slut once, then something has to change about your culture and soon.

I've got a list of things that are "traditional" or part of someone's "culture" that are just plain wrong but continue simply because they have been done for so long.

I've talked to the liberal types that live in these parts along these lines and they are like "OMG I can't believe you think some cultures are bad. You can't criticize them for their culture just because it's different from yours." Yes. Yes I can, if part of their culture involves completely inhumane or inhuman treatment of other humans or animals (or the environment in some cases) then that part of their culture needs to end. And "my" own "culture" is one of them in some respects.

Fuck excessive whaling. You can't endanger whole species just because other people have done it before you and told you that you need to keep doing it for no rational reason (aka tradition).

I'm not against protecting portions of our relatively new tradition of a constitutional republic and I am for protecting the rights of Christians. The globalists have been spreading the propoganda that western values are dangerous and I am very much against them telling us how we should think or live as long as we are not telling others how to live (Iraq/Iran)!

Wanting to control someone and subvert them if out of hand becomes interventionist and succumbs to relying on the state.

this is an example of tragedy of the commons, and should be looked upon as such; the answer is not more controls or limitations on who/when/where people can whale so much as it is an example of privatizing the ocean; if that could be done then the whale population would remain stable as it would become a true commodity.

As for the people attacking the Japanese fishing boats? Again, a case of property rights; if they're threatening the boat or causing damage to it, the Japanese have just-cause to retaliate.

I say Greenpeace has every right in international waters to defend whales from extinction and the Japanese have every right to shoot them. In that case then Greenpeace has the right to bear arms and use them if necessary. It's a war no doubt and personally I fall on the side of those who are trying to protect an entire species from going extinct from those who's practices is just plain wrong.

It's funny how the same people who shout, "Save the whales!" and "Stop killing trees!" are often the most vehement pro-abortionists. They're for the protection of whales and trees, but not of their own species. Nice.

LOL. I could see them running out into heavy traffic to save a puppy from being run over......while on their way to have an abortion.

This thread needs a dose of animal rights. The whales have a right not to extinct because of selfish human interests. The humans can find a livelihood elsewhere, so they should, or learn to restrict their hunting to sustainable levels.

Therefore, I see the activist group as enforcing the right of the whales to exist

Where do the whale rights end? Do chickens and cows have rights?

The save the whale children are pirates plain and simple. They should be shot, hung or drowned for their crimes. The Japanese navy should sink as many of the anti whalers as possible or at least until the kiddies learn the laws of the sea. Of course all of the whale lovers on this forum will be supporting the Law of the Sea Treaty that the gov. wants to sign. It will give ownership of everything in or under the sea to the U.N.
