Weekly Newspaper Ads in Iowa starting this week

Parocks. I prefer grassroots networking. That to me captures the spirit of liberty better than a uniform message that needs "higher" approval. Grassroots is where the life is in the Ron Paul revolution and that's not going to be controlled or it is no longer grass roots. If you care to sponsor an ad though, I'd be happy to consider wording you'd like to see out there. And of course you'd be free to consult whoever you like.

Oi vay. Perhaps people should watch the video of the speech Murray Rothbard gave to the Michigan LP. Ron is not going to win the nomination by trying to out mainstream the other mainstreamers. That is not why people are going to vote for Ron. He represents a difference from those people. Sometimes I wonder what people are thinking. It must be watching too much Dicky boy Morris, or Karl Roving Idiot, or something who knows.

Agree 100%. In 2007 it seemed all the GOP candidates were vying for some of Reagan's legacy. That's nothing new. The lions share of Ron Paul supporters in our town do not identify with the GOP, the Tea Party, Ronald Reagan or other conservative icons. They are sick of the slogans and the talk. Ron Paul is the only one to call to end the fed, and to bring the troops home. Also to end the war on drugs. This is about educating the public more than it is about winning. It would be nice to win, but it may be a long time, and so it's our job to keep educating the public. THE FED is the number one issue for many folks. And ending the wars.

The Republican Party, of which Ron Paul is a part, is roughly made up of 2 camps. The Conservatives vs the RINOs or, the Tea Party vs the Establishment.
Ron Paul should be seeking at this point to place himself squarely in the Conservative camp, the Tea Party camp. Why? because there are a lot of Conservative or
Tea Party votes. Those Conservative or Tea Party votes WILL BE GOING SOMEWHERE. If you do things to alienate Conservatives, even though Ron Paul is a True Conservative, by promoting those things that are the most unorthodox, the Conservatives will choose a different Conservative, and that Conservative could be a candidate that beats Ron Paul. However, if you are careful to market Ron Paul to Conservatives, as a Conservative, Ron Paul will be getting votes from competitors for the Conservative vote. 40% of Americans are Conservative, and most of them are Republicans. Ron Paul is a Conservative. The goal should be to win their votes.

It's 2012, and the goal is to win. And to win you need Conservatives. And there is a clear split within the Republican Party between the Tea Party and Conservatives and the Establishment and RINOs. Ron Paul can get Conservatives. You're saying that in your town Ron Paul appeals to those who do not identify with the GOP. And this is after you ran ad after ad trying to appeal to those who don't identify with the GOP? See my point? Normal GOPers, the Conservative Tea Partiers were or are turned off by the non mainstream things that you feature.

I understand that you feel you have success with a strategy designed to appeal to non Republicans, but I would recommend that you use tactics designed to minimize damage to Ron Paul. Is this newspaper you're advertising in a typical local weekly for a small town, or an alternative weekly typically found in larger areas with daily newspapers? If it was an alternative newsweekly, you'll be hitting a young demographic, probably more Obama than McCain in 08. If it's a rural weekly, a much older demo.

Tea Party is status-quo just as you mentioned. Honestly, what the fuck is the Tea Party? I see it as disgruntled Neo-Cons with no coherent message except NOT A DEM. Hence, the poll that came out with 72% of Tea Partiers would support Mandate Mitt. Appealing to these people is appealing to the lowest common denominator (sloganeering, platitudes, and above all else, you have to sell your soul to Roger Ailes). Ron isn't going to win by trying to out status-quo, out-mainstream, the people who do those things well. Once Ron abandons what makes Ron, Ron, so too does his support go.

Ron should be himself, and the people he appeals to such as paleoconservatives, libertarians, and independents need to get a-movin' to out-manuever the fucking Neo-Con / Tea-O-Cons. This ain't your 2007 Tea Party parocks.

Parocks. If you'd like to do your own ad campaign it's easy to do. In 07 I helped a couple of people from out of state place ads in Iowa newspapers. Tea Party is not a message I would promote in our town-- very few folks I know support the Tea Party.

Thank you Jefferson County!

BrianH I first want to thank you and Jefferson County for all you did in the last campaign it was simply remarkable and I was extremely proud. You not only won a county for Ron Paul but you helped spread his message in bordering counties as well. If I remember correctly Ron Paul also did well in Van Burn and Washington County as well. I'm in Brighton and would be interested in helping efforts in Washington County. Just curious if your meet up has looked into placing ads in the Washington Evening Journal or if your meet up focuses solely on Jefferson County? I'd be willing to send some money your way to run ads. Once again thanks for all your tireless efforts and hopefully folks look into the results your meet up has produced before they try to tell your tactics will hurt more than help.

Seems to me that ad would do pretty well in a retirement home, and real well anywhere else. Maybe not perfectly tailored for 'likely republican voters' as we know them, but a very good ad IMO.

Brian's strategy that won last time is exactly what we need to repeat and expand on this time around. The % of people who attend the straw poll or caucus is so low they can easily be overwhelmed. Focus on those who normally don't go to the Ames Straw Poll but whose main issue is ending the wars (or war on drugs), slashing the federal government, civil liberties, etc. You can find these people easily (for free) via anonymous poll (phone or door to door), then follow up in a month or two with a call targeted at their issue:
ie, for someone who says their prime issue is ending the war but is a strong democrat, you call back with something like

"Hi, I'm an antiwar activist and I'm looking for Iowa citizens who feel the same. Are you for the wars sir?"
"Certainly not!"
"Great! Would you be willing to volunteer for an afternoon to make a major impact?"
"Uh, doing what?"
"Well, the most important thing at this point is to inject ending the war into debate, so at the moment we need people to go to Ames and vote for Ron Paul, the anti-war republican. Would you be willing to do that?"
"But I'm a Democrat."
"I understand, but we need to show support for antiwar candidates to shift the political winds and there's no better place to do that than the presidential race."
"OK...what do I do?"
"Go to his iowa campaign website; he has a package deal which includes bus transportation, a ticket, tshirt, etc for $20? Is that OK?"
"Oh, now you want $20 out of me too?"
"If you can't afford it we can put you on a backup list in case we get enough donations to fund your ticket...would you be able to drive there?"
"No, I can afford it. I'll look into it, thanks."

And since Obama has the dem ticket locked up that same anti war dem could easily be convinced to vote for RP in the caucuses next year.

Thanks! Please join our meetup group online! In 2007 we had folks joining us from all around the world - it was one of the most active meetup groups in Iowa, despite the fact our town is only 10,000 people! Yes we did a few ads in the Washington Evening Journal last time. And can again this time.

Key to your argument is "anonymous poll". Anonymous poll does not turn Republicans off.

We need also to make some posters to put around advertising the tickets to the straw poll at $10 before July 4, after that it's $20. I added this to an ad we'll put in the paper this week:

Good additions, I'd say. Thanks!
