Was Thomas Jefferson a Christian?

The Church has explicitly made clear that to be a Christian you must believe in revelation, holy trinity, resurrection of Jesus, and that Jesus is the son of God born from the virgin Mary. Jefferson rejected all of those things.

Apparently some people believe that Jefferson believed in those things. That's pretty hilarious. Holy Trinity. lol!

Splain it! Aren't you one of those who claim the Judeo/Christian religion is a fallacy? Why would you attempt to use our basis for it against us if it's all just a fallacy to you anyway?

One can believe that Christian religious dogma is mostly fallacy and believe at the same time that Christianity also holds to some things that are wise. The two are not mutually exclusive.

I, for example, don't believe for the tiniest fraction of a second that the Bible is the "revealed word of God," but I have no problem whatever acknowledging that there is some valuable and wise content to be found therein.

Believing both is in no way contradictory.

Exactly. Similarly, if you believe in the truth of the Pythagorean theorem, that doesn't mean you believe in all the teachings of that sect.

No, Thomas Jefferson was NOT a Diest

Folks, this has been hashed and rehashed. When BeFranklin went to all the trouble of quoting letter after letter, most of the claims that our Founders were Deists, Atheists and someone even claimed, Satanist, disappeared for a very long time.

Now, however, it appears that they are once again rearing their ugly head. I am so glad I asked BeFranklin to preserve his work, on RPF's Wiki. :)

You are now making a reverse argument. I asked why you would use text from our teachings if you believe it is fallacy. So now you are admitting that the Bible has relevance for you in some ways?

Do you really think BeFranklin - one of the most religious forum members ever - was quoting the letters in context, and not cherry-picking to avoid contradictions? ;)

In the end, anyone who really wants to know needs to carefully read Thomas Jefferson's letters for themselves, without biased filters from either camp.

I conjecture that CCTelander will laugh when he reads the post I'm quoting.

Well hell, even I believe that some religious dogma is fallacy. That isn't my point. But I am glad to read that you are open to some of the Bible's "valuable and wise content".

who isn't? the bible says don't steal. most people agree with that. but that doesn't make someone a Christian.

a text of hundreds of pages of course will have at least a few sentences that are true. accomplishing to write something so long without anything at all that is true would be a really big feat.

Go read them and see what you think. In a great deal of what he posted, there is a great deal of context. But, you see, I had already read a lot of the documents which he posted and yes, I think he did a good job.

But, I am not the one who is questioning whether Thomas Jefferson is a Christian. A number of the documents, in their entirety, are online. So, if you honestly believe he is selectively quoting, go look them up and judge for yourself.

I understand not just believing what someone says and wanting to see the entire documents. I respect that. But, I also hope you go do the research yourself and not just trust someone telling you that Thomas Jefferson was something other than a Christian.

Why do I even bother. So daft.

My suggestion would be to reserve comment until the next time a comment is made about Obama being a socialist and then remind people Obama is not a socialist because he does not self label a socialist and self labeling is the only requirement to be Christian or socialist.

All who self label as Christians will be saved through the narrow gate!

Why? I asked you why you would quote from something you reject outright, and you twist it around and state that to do so, " doesn't mean you believe in all the teachings of that sect."

Well no shit! And this isn't the issue anyway. You are diluting my original point.

Actually, I retract it. Maybe he wouldn't laugh. It's just to sad to be funny.

Now you're equating Thomas Jefferson to Obama? lol

"I am a real Christian – that is to say, a disciple of the doctrines of Jesus Christ."
--The Writings of Thomas Jefferson, p. 385.

Thomas Jefferson says he is a "disciple of the doctrines of Jesus Christ." It's God's Job to Judge Him -- not you or I -- to say if he is allowed into Heaven or not. I feel that God is a Just and Righteous God and makes no mistakes.

Judgment Day
- coming soon to a graveyard near you -

God: I noticed you spent 99% of your time on yourself. I also noticed you spent 99% of your money on yourself. How do you plea?

Saved Christian: Lord, I self labeled as a Christian on many occasions.

Jesus: I never knew you.
