Want to name my newborn baby girl 'Liberty'

Just became a father of a healthy & beautiful baby girl, whom I would like to give a name “Liberty”. What do you guys think of that name for a living person? Do you like it or do you think it's odd and/or possibly troubling?

Little background:

I’m European guy, married to a Chinese. We met and dated while studying in US, which is one part of the reason it makes sense for us to give our daughter an American name. But now we live in Hong Kong, so it would be a bit more unusual than in the states. If we do decide to give our daughter a middle name, it would probably be a Chinese one. All Chinese people here usually have American middle names for easier introduction/pronunciation purposes (I call it their Hollywood names).

My personal desire to give our daughter the name Liberty or perhaps some other libertarian name is quite strong. Ever since the Ron Paul Revolution changed the course of my life in 2007, I've cared about nothing more than learning about and promoting the ideas of individual freedom. My newly acquired taste of freedom during my studies in the US and now here in Hong Kong today (the worlds’ freest economy) is a solid and constant reminder of how important freedom really is for one’s well being. Well, enough of my blabbering…

Thanks in advance for any of your thoughts.

I think it's a great name.

If you are still thinking it over, you might look up some words in other languages that mean the same thing and see if any of those strike you as a better sounding name. I also like to think about how my kids' first, middle, and last names all sound together.

Why are you people encouraging this?

Do not name her something she will hate you for later.

What are you talking about?

First, she lives in Hong Kong so I'm pretty sure people are used to a variety of names there.

As someone else mentioned, Libby is a great nickname if she doesn't like being called Liberty.. and if she despises the name Liberty itself when she gets older, then she can go fuck herself. Ok, the last bit is a little harsh, but come on.. who doesn't want liberty?

I'm not a fan of using kids to promote your political ideology. If it's subtle it's fine, but there's nothing subtle about that. It would be like a progressive naming her child WhitePrivilege.

No it wouldn't be like that. Liberty is something everybody values, even if they don't always mean the same thing by it.

Why do you think she would?

People, especially girls, are self-conscious. Liberty is not a person's name. Flash-forward to when she is a teenager, this could cause problems with the boys. And long-term, she will always get a weird look or question whenever she says her name.

What about Leaf or Moonbeam?

What a little doll! Congratulations! :)
Maybe Liberty for a middle name, instead of a first name.

Thank you all guys for your comments and suggestions.

Though I personally love the name, some of the disapproving comments here and elsewhere prove that my concerns were somewhat justified. I know that short and simple names are the most popular, but that is not what I am after. Popular names like Sophia, Emma, Madison, Anna, Lucy or Cathy, with all due respect to people with those fine names, just doesn't cut it for me.

Am I trying to make a political statement with it? Perhaps it looks that way, but I don't see it that way. Besides the fact that we are libertarians and promote our great cause, the birth of my daughter is also in a way a celebration of love of diversity and of freedom (libertarian traits) that my wife and I have been lucky to enjoy.

At the same time, I don't want to bring trouble to my child due to possible teasing by other kids. Though, I'm not sure how much of a concern this would really be for the name Liberty. Some say that it is the kind of name you would give to a ship. Or that it associates with redneck kids competing in beauty pageants. Another person said slutty as well. Yet, on some baby-names websites I found that owners of this name who left comments all love their name.

I will think it through some more before deciding. Any further comments from all of you to help ease the dilemma are very welcome.

Thank you all again.
