If so, this will result in him being worse the second time around. His tax cuts and SCOTUS picks were not his idea. They were dictated to him by other Republicans. His own idea of the ideal Supreme Court justice was his leftist sister. He also forwent a lot of his other extreme left wing ideas like socialized healthcare and stringent federal gun control law because he felt that he needed Republican support.

As for VP picks, Pence was awful on foreign policy. But on a lot of other things, it would be a mistake to think we couldn't do worse, especially if Trump no longer thinks he need to balance the ticket with a conservative in that slot.

Factors that constrained Trump's leftism in his first term will no longer have the same effect when he's a lame duck.
