Virgin Islands Explained (Did Paul win? Not really, but kind of.)

OK I read the rules and it seems that switching after the election is not addressed. This seems odd because a candidate running as uncommitted may not have gotten votes if he/she was for a specific candidate.

The good news:

We did get 2 Alternates

2 others uncommitted and 1 for Grinch and santo each

Maybe even 4 Alternates! Places 11, 12, 13 and 14 are tied with 15 votes each. ;) I dont know which method they use to break the tie. There are 2 Paul delegates, one Santorum and Gingrich delegate tied.

Yes you are correct.

It was Late/early and I didn't catch the tie. We could get 4 though.

Those Delegate Candidates receiving the six highest vote totals shall be certified as Delegates.
Those Delegate Candidates receiving the next six highest vote totals shall be certified as Alternates.
Ties shall be resolved by a draw of cards.

I am Robert "Maxi" Schanfarber, the Ron Paul delegate that won in the VI and I'm going to Tampa! My son, Joshua will be joining me as an alternate!

Just that it's such a low percentage of the population. 0.05 percent voted.

If I could not vote for President in November, I really wouldn't care which person won the GOP nod or the Dem nod. I am glad some are of a different opinion, obviously, but the territories are not well-known for high turnout.

There was no straw poll there. They only voted for delegates, but on the ballot, people ran as a delegate for a candidate so a vote for the delegate was considered a vote for the candidate. So, Ron did win the popular vote, except for one uncommitted delegate that switched to Romney AFTER he already became delegate. Some may want to award his numbers to Romney which would give him the popular vote as well. This of course, makes no sense cause that guy wasn't under Romney's name on the ballot. Ron Paul got the most votes.

Meanwhile the VI GOP has updated their results post on their site:

VI GOP 2012 Caucus Results (After Ballot Verification of Challenged Ballots, Unofficial)

PLEASE NOTE IN THE VI OUR RULES PROVIDE FOR THE ELECTION OF DELEGATES IN A PARTY CAUCUS. EVERY ONE WHO VOTES CAN CHOOSE DELEGATES (UP TO SIX) WHO MAY NOT NECESSARILY BE PLEDGED TO THE SAME PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE. SINCE GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY HAD ONLY THREE CONVENTION DELEGATES RUNNING UNDER HIS NAME THAT GAVE VOTERS A CHOICE TO VOTE FOR OTHER COMMITTED OR NON-COMMITTED CANDIDATES. IT APPEARS THAT OUT OF RESPECT FOR CONGRESSMAN PAUL’S CAMPAIGN THERE WERE EXTRA VOTES TO GIVE TO OTHER CANDIDATES OR NON-COMMITTED CANDIDATES.

ALTHOUGH DR. PAUL RECEIVED ONLY ONE DELEGATE, HIS TEAM RECEIVED UP TO THREE ALTERNATE DELEGATE SLOTS AND WILL BE WELL REPRESENTED IN OUR SMALL DELEGATION.

The first six highest vote recipients are delegates. All are elected at large for the U.S. Virgin Islands

To be honest, it is possibble that Romney had slightly more VI voters on his side, but we don't know and will probably never know. That's because every voter had six votes. We don't know (and probably will never know) how many used this option or how many decided to vote for only one (or two or three...) delegate candidate. And I presume that in the last case the other five votes the voter had simply went "down the drain", so that they weren't accumulated on the one delegate candidate he voted for. But even that we don't know, maybe Maxi can tell us.
