[Video] Sen. Rand Paul's speech at CPAC 2011

True, but Obama got elected by those punks. And believe me, not many of them want him for 4 more years.

But except for those Ron BROUGHT into that room, I can see them all saying anyone but the guy with these supporters, at this point.

I feel like over the years we worked to get conservatives to give Ron another chance, not spun by media. I feel like we really blew that work today.

Well, onward and upwards I suppose...

We'll see what the overall takeaway will be -- but there is youtube footage now that every candidate running against Ron can exploit.

in the world of the average voter, there is no such thing as cpac. only american idol.

I standingly ovate.

Rand is right - we need bold leadership for 2012 - wonder who he's got in mind?

Ace job calling out the "big government conservatives"-- those opposed to considering any cuts in the military budget.

Very Good speech BUT I wish he would have put a better spin on cutting the defense budget. Something like "It's time to stop jeopardizing our safety with reckless imperialism. Our brave soldiers are not to be wasted by bureaucrats and Exxon Mobile." Plus Rand stumbled over his words like never before. Especially when he was quoting Goldwater. But didn't hurt his speech too much.

Ive had my reservations regarding Rand, but that speech was amazing!!! Great that he brought up entitlements and the military.

That's just not his style... Rand doesn't roll like that at all. He's the guy who sneaks ideology into his rhetoric. It's a better strategy for him, and it's one reason he doesn't get marginalized. Better to emphasize how important national security is before saying we need defense cuts. Or how we share many democratic values with Israel and how they are a great ally, before saying we need to cut all aid to them. If he were to say "American foreign policy shows reckless imperialism", he'd pretty much alienate himself from 90% of the country for no good reason.

It's also one reason why screaming things like war criminal at dick cheney and booing speakers isn't helpful at all for the movement

Right. These Neo-cons really believe in the current foreign policy, so trying to debate them on that point is going to be a hard fought battle. Where we can make much better progress is by arguing the fiscal point. That point they must agree on, or they are hypocrites of the highest order. That puts them on the defensive, rather than the typical case where the anti-imperialist is on the defensive for being "anti-American" and other nonsense.

It's about politics. Look, you might hate these people and their foreign policy, but THEY are going to help determine the next Republican nominee for president. We'll need friends right now, not enemies. In any other venue, I'd be all for calling them on their bullshit. In fact, in a general election I think we'd win over a ton of independents calling them out on their war mongering ways.

The problem is the fiscal argument only works temporarily. The moment it seems we are 'out of the woods' so to speak they will go back to directly promoting the same garbage. That is why I think the fiscal argument while fine, should not be the end-all be all or even the primary argument made. Listen to this and tell me that we should not be using this?
