Rand Paul on State of the Union

What do Republicans expect to hear in Tuesday’s State of the Union address? Are there any big areas where they can work with President Obama? Plus, has the New Jersey bridge scandal hurt the Republican brand? David talks with Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul Sunday on Meet the Press.

Rand is doing both CNN State Of The Union and Meet The Press on the same day? Gnarly.

Rand is becoming more and more skilled at these type of "gotcha" interviews. Notice how he replies to the question in about the first 10 words, then goes 3 or 4 minutes speaking to the issue in terms of Liberty.

Well done.

I also like the way he starts the interview just like his Dad:

interiewer: "Joining now is Senator Rand Paul... blah blah... Senator Paul thank you for being with us"
Rand: "Nice to be with you" - head-nod, no smile, doesn't address the interviewer by name

I wish he'd have referred to Snowden as a hero. wonder where Gregory got that? perhaps he's misreading our forum.

I do not understand what Rand is talking about when he says that Snowden should be held accountable as a law breaker.

"Held accountable" is a great phrase to use. The people against Snowden will interpret that as punishing him, but it could also mean simply having a fair trial which is usually what Rand has been saying. If you break the law and there are mitigating circumstances then you certainly won't always get punished to the fullest extent or even punished at all depending on the situation. The hard part is making sure that such a fair trial can even happen which is why Snowden is staying away.

Very good and interesting analysis, but too many brainwashed Americans think being "held accountable" will be accomplished by being taken out by a drone, a CIA contract killer, or moved to an Egyptian detention facility for the severest of torture. And many will be fist-pumping to the boisterous chants of "U.S.A! U.S.A.!.."

Yes. And I'm not sure Rand can win this 2016 thing unless he is willing to eventually spin the argument as the People Against The System and deliver the message. But maybe he can. For whatever reason he is taking a more cautious and subtle approach here in 2013-2014 thus far. There is such an endless amount of embarrassing screw ups by his opponents that he may be just kicking back and allowing them to all hang themselves for awhile. It's frustrating for us, but Rand Paul probably has some winning strategy in mind. And remember he's no shrinking violet with the NSA class action suit, drone/civil liberties filibuster, economic freedom zones, balanced budgets, Obamacare bashing, etc. If he weren't the son of Ron Paul we would all be flipping out with enthusiasm and imploring everyone to "check this guy out."

Just depends where you go. Trust me. This is a big win.

Rand is sounding very, balanced, rational, and Presidential. And down to earth at the same time. Not many people can pull this off. We are on an upward trajectory...
