That's the way MSNBC usually does things save maybe Chris Matthews, if they are hostile to a guest that may share some things in common with them, they will butter them up with a few nice softballs and appear to be taking their side, and then ambush them with something downright obnoxious as soon as they drop their guard, this is exactly how Maddow sandbagged Rand on the whole Civil Rights thing, and I think he's learned never to drop his guard with these people since that interview.
